Hi All,

I believe my brake light switch has gone on my Pug 306, 2001 2.0 HDI.

Fairly certain it is this part that has gone (fuses are fine) because if you look at it and flick it with a knife the lights will work for a period before stopping again. It is as though the spring is knackered inside the switch.

Fine I thought, so I brought a new switch and read around the net then got worried as most people said it was a complete pig to replace! Short of actually removing the dash this thing looks awful to do.. there is just no space to work in and the position of the switch means you just cannot get your hand onto the actual device.

Therefore I think it is a dash out job which I don't really have the time to do.

Any other reccomendations, or does anyone have an estimate as to how much this would cost from a dealers?

I had the dash out in my 306 (was a Mk1 but it should be similar) to replace the heater matrix and its not a hard job, just very, very lengthy.

Took a whole weekend, although a garage should be able to do it a lot quicker you're still looking at at least 4 or 5 hours labour probably :(

Decided against the pain. Just having it done at a main dealer for the princly sum of 60. Not bad tbh...beats wasting a day for me anyway. Fancied a main dealer as didnt really want the dash trashed by an indy.

However i also asked them for a quote on a cambelt change and they said 350! Seems a bit much? The diesal should be done at 96k and it may have but i did not own it and it was from an auction so who knows? It's purely for motorway driving and is now on 111k. Reccomendations? Worth an attempt by me? Am ok with cars and always change pads and other menial tasks but not sure of the complexity of this?

Anyway at least the damned brake lights will be fixed.

There's no way they're taking the dash out for 60 quid! Must be another way :)

Cambelt is pretty complex, hence the cost so not really an amateur DIY job. Should be able to get an indy to do it for a fair bit less, but still a lot cheaper than a new engine!

I just had a quote from the garage next door to where I work for a cam belt change on a 2000 306 XS 1.8 16v AC. They're a Holden Group Renault garage but they do everything.

been quoted £232 inc VAT which I think is quite reasonable .

Just got mine done (sig) for £184 inc. First place I called but seemed reasonable and I couldn't be fagged with ringing around :p
