Just moved to a cable area. Need a highly reliable connection (for gaming), speed is secondary.
Not sure how many of those ratings are based on cable or adsl or whatever other service, but majority are talking about net troubles.
Should I stay clear of VM cable and go for adsl with another isp? Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

Im with VM 10mb.

First time with cable, always been with decent ADSL ISP's before.

Reliability is fine. Speed is shocking, although its mostly do do with their **** traffic management thing.

If its only reliability you are after then they should be fine, get about 20ms ping, and only time connection drops is when my wireless decides to turn itself off :D

I get a great connection, pings of around 30ms on COD4 and about 16-20 on BF2142.

Upload speed isnt great, but its good.

Im on the 20meg service btw.

Depends on how much you want to spend, what sort of speeds you're after and what level of service you can get from ADSL in your new property.

Reading the sticky at the top of this forum should educate you a bit.

The majority of who are talking about net troubles? I've been nothing but happy with my 20Mb and then my 50Mb. I just haven't left a review on any of the million review sites. I can't be the only one.

I'm on VM's 50mbit service, it is pretty good most of the time - can see the contention in my area kicking in at peak times but still easily hits 40Mbit/sec if I need to download something.

Ping times in games are brilliant, decent UK TF2 servers are pretty much all <20Ms in game.

At my last place I had ADSL from Be* and also Zen, Be was very good most of the time but had some serious latency issues and oversubscription in my area once O2 got their dirty mitts on the LLU exchanges that ruined it for me until they added more capacity.

FWIW Neither of them could touch Zen in terms of the quality of service (i.e. I got 8Mbit/sec all the time) or their customer service, but then all in including the 2nd BT line my connection from Zen was costing circa £45 a month.

Never heard of "www.reviewcentre.com". Personally I've been with them since December 1999 and been very happy with the connection. I've always had the advertised speed and had only downtime a couple of times that I can remember - thats pretty good going for nearly 10 years with the same ISP. Some areas used to have problems but I think overall it has become better for those people.

This.

I have been online for over 15 years now and ALLWAYS been with Diamond Cable/NTL/Virgin Media.

My connection has been fantastic since day one (2000ish). I can only think of a few times that i've had problems and only once that i had to ring them to sort it. One new cable modem later and all sorted. Always get great speeds although their traffic management is pretty restrictive.

People only use review sites like that when they a) have a problem they want to nerd rage about or b) are a bit sad. All ISPs are "ok" unless you have a problem. It's the customer service that defines a good comms company IMO.

OP, VM is fine, albeit with harsh traffic shaping. IMO they have above average customer support ;)

I have been *very* impressed with VM so far.

Everything they said they would do, they have done (e.g. modem turned up on time, connected within an hour or so that same day).

I'm on 20Meg service in Belfast.

I've been using ntl/vm for 6 years, wouldn't dream of using adsl now.

constant full speed, awesome pings, hardly any downtime.

echo-ing the above really, been with VM (diamond cable and ntlworld) for years. Downtime is rare, I've always had the advertised speeds and the odd occasions I've had to phone their customer service, it has been pretty good.

Also the traffic shaping isnt that bad at all, you just need a bit of restraint on when you download. VM have listed all the times during the day when traffic shaping is in use on their website, so if your still getting caught out then its your own fault for the most part tbh
