You may remember I mentioned that since an oil, air, plug service the GFs clio was sounding quite rattly.

Here is a short clip with the sound. I think its fairly obvious to hear, most noticeably at the beginning and more so at the end when I step back from the car a tad.

So, any ideas?

Oh and yes, it's NOT a diesel

That does sound pretty awful, but it's very hard to diagnose the issue from a video unfortunately. Does the noise seem to come from a specific area if you run it with the bonnet open?

If it was like that right after the service you should have gone back to the garage that did it.

Sounds to me like its running on 3 cylinders and the engine is shaking about as its mising?

Could be co-incidence and the coil pack has failed shortly after the service. Any lights on the dash?

That's the sound of surrender.

Doesn't sound like tappets, they're usually a more accute sound. I'm also not sure it's the sound of a misfiring cylinder or lack of cylinder firing at all.

Check the connections around the coil pack and injectors. Is the CEL (check engine light) on?

ok, well I'll try and answer everyone's quesions in one hit.

Driveability:

  • Unchanged, its a 1.6RXE and it feels like it. Slight flat spot in 3rd maybe but sure that was there before. Firing is definately on all 4 cylinders.
  • I can take one with the bonnet open but the noise is slightly harder to hear belive it or not.
  • No CEL
  • Spark Plugs tight (and have been changed again since just to make sure)
  • Noise is there permanently at idle or driving, no difference when clutch depressed, cannot be heard from inside the car
  • It's not a tappets sound, its very much lower in the engine.

GF sometimes says car is reluctant to start after a short journey. I'm pretty sure the HT leads are on their way out but am also pretty sure that would not be causing this noise

Does the noise get faster with engine revs?

Sounds more like a clacking noise than a tapping noise. Have a listen over by the belts and pulleys? Does it sound like it's coming from them?

Doesn't sound good. You're right about it sounding like a diesel. My petrol doesn't sound anything like that. Though my 1.2 Clio feels down on power. Only thing that makes it feel better is higher octane fuel, not sure what's wrong with that. opinions appreciated too.

OP can you narrow down the source of the sound? Sure it's not part of the exhaust that's loose or cracked or both?

Wondered this, I think something is loose potentially in the CAT

Has the car got air con ? The fan on my old Polo started making a similar noise when you started the car I couldn't track it down for a while until I noticed one day it had stopped and it was due to the air con being off as the fan continually runs at a low speed with the compressor. Something had hit the fan and it was wobbling about on the shaft.
