Will I need to find and download 64 bit drivers BEFORE I install W7 for all of this lot? But don't need to worry about pre downloading drivers for my 32 bit software, according to threads and stickies here, right?

HD 4870, new

3 hard drives ,
1 sata, new
2 pata, older

sony optiarc DVD writer, new

HP printer , old

HP scanner, old

MX510 mouse, old

Trust keyboard, old

Phillips 19" crt monitor, quite old now

onboard reaktek ethernet card, new

onboard realtek HD audio, new

most the stuff should work even with the default w7 drivers, the graphics/sound drivers can be downloaded+installed after the install, I suspect the only device you might have difficulties with is the printer/scanner, even with x64 drivers for xp/vista it might not work properly.

I find Driver Detective quite useful though, as long as the onboard network works it will search and find the rest of the missing drivers post install.

Thanks. Maybe I should at least pre-check for a 64 bit driver for the realtek ethernet then just so that I can get online. Well if push comes to shove, I've been meaning to get an all in one printer-scanner and they're pretty cheap these days. Are all new printer-scanners automatically 64 bit compatible out of the box?

realtek drivers are on the win 7 disk . and the MX518 mouse works fine as well (i haven't got the logitech software installed though)

The only thing I can see there that may give you an isue is the scanner though if it's TWAIN compliant I wouldn't expect that to be a problem either

Cool. I'd found 64 bit drivers for my realtek ethernet, and realtek HD audio (version 2.64) just before you mentioned they're on the discs. Not sure if my
scanner or printer are TWAIN, but since I don't use them a lot, I'll worry about it after installing W7. If they don't work and I can't get drivers, then c'est la vie.
I just placed my order for windows 7 home premium. Just think, all my 4GB of ram will become usable, yay :)

well i`d say there are a lot more IDE drives out there being used than sata so win 7 will be fine
everything on your list will be fine as there standard windows drivers for most, it the scanner u may have a problem with, but thats HP`s problem not microsofts
