gigabyte x48 please help

Hi there is this the ds5 oc had on offer a month or so a go?

If so I had one of these and had to rma it, I suspect the nb was overheating. When I touched the heatpipe after the boards died it was exceptionally hot.

This was even not overclocked on a q6700 so the board was running below spec anyway. HWMonitor was showing temps way over 60, Symptoms were random freezes in gaming sessions, pc would reboot and seem OK then do the same thing again randomnly,

I really dislike these heatpipe systems most boards tend to come with nowadays, covering the nb, sb and vrm's. Much prefer isolated solutions for each heat source, but thats another matter.

Good Luck in sorting it out.

updated the bios re overclocker and so far so good.

the temp it shows in hwmonitor is from a temp sensor that is located just below the gfx card i beleave and not the real nb temp.

Excellent - it will be great if it turns out a simple BIOS flash has resolved things - time will tell.

Are you still running it with the side panel off? (The reason i ask is, if you are, it still could be a contributing factor to the systems renewed stability.)

If the side panel is still off i would leave it off for another 24 hrs - and if it remains stable during that period put the panel back on and re-observe. Hopefully, it will remain stable and we can sign off on it - if not we'll be fairly sure it's a heat related issue and work from there...

but not had a lot of time to really play games today.

As your system tends to freeze under heavy load it's still very early days...

As the side panel is on I would keep it on and concentrate on testing the new BIOS at stock settings. If it remains stable during games over the next few days then you have a result. You can then add your clock back and hope that it continues to remain stable.

However, if it doesn't remain stable at *stock*, with the side panel on, try the desk fan test over a couple of days.

could it be because you are trying 2 x 4870s in crossfire with only a 550w PSU? May explain the freezing when you are gaming.

The PSU is certainly a contender - but due to lack of spare parts to test we're having to rule out other things via process of elimination. He's tried a standard PSU voltage test but he hasn't tried one under load yet.

Having said that, if you can get your hands on another quality PSU to test in your system, it would be a quick and simple test and a great component to rule out. )If you don't have any luck with the new BIOS)

the psu will be upgraded in the next couple of weeks to a modular 750w but for now a new case come first which will be the coolermaster sniper.

still not crashed ill put it through its paces today.

If you're going to be upgrading the PSU no matter what, and if you haven't bought the case already, I would reverse the order priority of the 2 items and get the PSU first.

The reason being is that you could rule out the PSU as a possibility sooner rather than later - especially if the system becomes unstable again after the BIOS flash and the desk fan test.

Of course if it remains stable under load after heavy use the immediacy of testing a different PSU will not be so crucial.
