HTC Hero, coming July on Orange and T-Mobile, makes me want!

I'm having trouble installing the custom ROM, I followed the guide putting the file on my sdcard and holding the home key while booting up but I'm getting a picture with an ! and a phone.

what contract length? think on 18 month contract, i got 400 min, unlim text, unlim net, and insurance for £21 :D but was £100 for the handset :( but it was paid for by simplydrop taking my n95 :)
 
18months too. :)

Oddly, with insurance on top it's £27pm...even though insurance is meant to be £6pm. :D

Best I could have gotten for my old handset is £40, plus I wanted to keep it as it's running WinMo and is a good SatNav unit. :p
 
Yes just rename the file to update. And you can delete the rom files off your SDcard. I have a folder on my pc with all the rom files just incase i need them.
 
Just ordered a hero on orange with 1200 mins,unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £29 a month which seems quite good.
What would be the first thing to change on it with it being on orange?

if it is from orange direct then the ROM would be the first thing i'd change judging from another thread on here about the wifi usage

got mine from mobiles.co.uk and it came as an unbranded handset with the latest ROM installed :)

would you mind linking the other thread, i have an orange branded phone and have updated to the latest HTC release.
 
Seems the Orange update is preventing rooting in the future?

Shame, I was about to order this, but would like to root. Also, this Unique service, does anyone have any proper information on it?

Anyone work for Orange that can clarify?

Nothing. I got lazy and gave up trying to root it.

I want to try the newest release from MoDaCo but as I can't root I can't seem to get to the custom ROM install screen...seems I've locked it to Orange only now. :(
 
Does this phone have a tethering capability? Not that I use it very often but its handy to have.

Whats the deal with getting a phone via the post rather than in store? If I get the Hero on upgrades via telephone do you get a return period incase you dont like it or is that internet only? (Im presuming the distance selling act is enforced)

Cool, cheers, I'll do that some point in the next few days, bored of the Orange rom. Whilst it is quick (I don't actually have many apps installed) some of the Orange stuff annoys me, and the lacking of ability with other apps is annoying...like no SetCPU etc.

You can install a tethering app, my friend has it on his.

I got mine as an upgrade from Orange over the phone and was informed that I had 7 days in which to test out the phone (and sim) and send it back if I didn't like it. :)
 
Just got my Orange Hero and am impressed so far.

However can anyone recommend what I should do with it to get the most out of it, i.e. flash it, get this and that app and don't do this!?

That would be great, and also can anyone explain what the flashing / ROM / Rooting is all about in simple terms?
