Hi

The missus currently has a Mini Cooper S which i think is a 56/07 plate i can't remember which.
She's been struggling to afford the petrol in the last few months due to a change in circumstances and she's thinking of getting rid of it. She worked out that she was getting rougly 30mpg on an average basis and she seems to be doing quite a lot of miles as she topped up £50 on Thursday and currently has an almost empty tank.

She's going to be doing quite a lot of motorway miles in the future as her work is relocating and i'd guess about 40-50 miles a day will be done so she wants something thats going to be efficient. She's seen the Hyundai I30 which looks quite good and seems to be good on mileage but i pointed out the 1.6 diesel is dog slow and she wouldn't be very happy going from a Cooper S to something that slow no matter what she says right now.

Looking at the parker guide she'll hopefully get about 11k?? for hers. Any recommendations on what she should be looking for. She's probably prepared to get something up to 3 years oldbut no older as she has a personalised reg that begins with KH56. If possible she'd like to get some cash back so maybe cars around the 9k bracket would be ideal but she'd probably sacrifice that for something that would suit her better.

Cheers

TDCI Mondeo, she wants bland economy for long motorway drives it ticks all the boxes!

Personally I'd suck it up and keep the Cooper!

TBH going to a Mondy TDCi, you're only going from 30mpg to 40mpg on average - on more expensive fuel.

I think the outlay / money lost on changing isn't worth while.

I thought a cooper s was fairly good on economy, when did the efficient dynamics come out for the s?

Really! My Zetec 130 TDCi currently averages 48MPG. This is mostly an 11 mile drive to work. That's some traffic, some B Roads and around 6 Miles of 70ish DCW.

Thats what I was going to say! Mine averages about the same on my 12 mile 45 minute stop start comute and mid 50's or better on a motorway speed run.

Tell her to stop nailing it? My mate owns an R56 Cooper S also and he gets about 35 out of it.

Mine's a fair bit around town getting through town in the rush hour - about 41~42mpg average at the moment. On a long run I'll get low to mid 50s - entirely depends how you use it.

My assumption was the OP's missus was either using it a lot around town or driving it quite hard as 30mpg seems low for a small petrol.

I went to the Elvedon Forest Center Parcs the other week. 4 Adults and a boot full, taking it steady but not slow. Did 58MPG avarage for the whole trip.

I had a TDCi hire car that gave me simmilarly impressive number from the trip computer. The actual consumption was about 10mpg less however...

stick with it, when you convert mpg to litres she probably wont see much of the money spent in changing car. I fill up £10 earlier in the ST220 than i did in the clio, sure that extra tenner equated to 100 miles, but it really depends on just how bad these circumstances you describe are.

IMO a change for fuel economy reasons alone only makes sense if

1) Its a no cost change in terms of purchase price
2) The comparable MPG is at least 15~20mpg more
3) Other costs (insurance, tax etc) are the same at least

Otherwise it just doesn't make sense
