Hey all,
Well iv got me a late 2008 Macbook Pro Unibody, and for ages iv been thinking about putting in a SSD drive for the main system drive and pairing that with a WD 1TB 5200RPM drive using an optibay to house the 2nd drive, giving me SSD performance for the system and all my files on the 1TB (do a lot of photography)

Got the SSD drive yesterday, at the moment its in the normal hard drive housing, optibay should be here in 4 days, just thought id write and post my findings in this thread as after looking around the net, it doesnt seem anyone has really done this, check back if interested :)

I'm really interested in seeing how you get on with this mate. While I don't consider my 3,1 to be in the slightest bit slow, I think an SSD upgrade will give me a significant speed boost and will be significantly cheaper than changing to a unibody.

MacRS4 on here has done just that! Have a lookie here and see, you might find his blog entry useful.

Very interested in how you get on with it though so I'm looking forward to this thread being updated.

Which SSD did you go for?

Cheers for the link, looks like is indeed dooable ! My main concern is the 12.5mm drive height of the 1TB, but after doing my research it seems it will fit in the normal hd mount, fitting my SSD yesterday it certainly seems there is enough height.

Went for the Crucial 128GB M225, very nippy ! Lightroom used to take a good 8-10 seconds fully load with my WD scorpio black, its about 2/3 now.

Would you *really* risk a £1.5k laptop on a maybe?

Say your motherboard breaks and they have a wiff of an excuse to not serve you as a screw is in the wrong place or something.

The hassle of an external HD outweighs the risk TBH.

unless they can prove he did something that caused the mobo to be damaged then apple wouldn't have a leg to stand on in all fairness.

luckily we live in a country where we are hugely protected by customer rights and trading rights/laws.

I think you're being somewhat over cautious, Concy. It's not exactly major surgery and anyone even slightly competent with a screwdriver can do this.

It's a fair point, I've nearly SSD'd my MBP but as im upgrading to Arrendale in 2010 and its got 3 years applecare I don't really want to risk it. I could easily do it and probably get away with it but for what I use it now I don't see the point anymore.

Question is, do I spend the extra and get a dedicated GPU... seeing as I have a MP doing all the hard work... [but thats not for now!]

Oh and select group of friends you have ha ha. What did I do to get there? :p

The M225 is what I use.

I have a 12.5mm 2.5" drive here and it doesn't fit in my late 2008 MBP - it fouls the battery cover?

Well they deffo fit the 17" ones.... just not sure about the 15" 2008 I have. I'll double check when I get home if that helps.

I put a 12.5mm one in mine to copy some stuff off and then couldn't get the battery cover on

Didn't try that hard as I just wanted some stuff off of it, so I took it out once copied off.
