Thanks for the info in the previous thread, decided that the mrs would be getting a Ford Fiesta 1.25 or 1.4 Zetec (1.4 are easier to get hold of and she only does 6k miles per year so economy wont make any difference)

Criteria... Silver, Black, or Red. Alloy Wheels.

Something like this..

Then While I was looking I came across the Seat Ibiza..

Now, shes getting a loan and the car needs to cost her as little as possible in terms of breakdowns and repairs.

Where would your money go between these two?

I drove a 1.4 Ibiza in Majorca. Granted it had done 90K and was a shafted hire car but it was really rather crap, even it was for a girl not interested in cars.

I've used a courtesy 1.25 Fiesta from the local Ford bodyshop and I must say it was much better. Maybe a little less solid interior wise, but the ride and handling was easier to live with.

The Fiesta will be more fun to drive but it feels a bit tinny in terms of build. The Ibiza feels more solid but its more wooden to drive and there really are some horrendous engines in the range. Don't even bother with the 1.2 and make sure you get the higher powered 1.4 - there are two versions I think. Get her to try a Micra as well - its a surprisingly decent supermini.

Grrr... this is starting to annoy me.

I worked out that owning a 6ish year old Fiesta or Ibiza will cost around £1.1k per year (including MOT, Tax, loan interest, depreciation (worst case))

Thats with fingers crossed that nothing goes wrong with either car.

A brand new C2 on contract hire special offer works out Costing £1.5k per year (including everything Ive included above), for 2 years. She likes it, even thought its bottom spec.

Does a new car make sense here? Im trying not to believe it. It wont need tyres, brakes or any consumables because of the small milegae she does. Then on the other hand, a second hand car is likely to need some replaceing as they wont all be brand new when she gets it.

Bear with me then.... I hope I have got it wrong.

£3500 Fiesta.

£2500 Loan.
+
£1000 Ford Ka part ex.

= £4384 (including interest, best loan % she can get :(, she has no credit rating at all)

Residual Value - Worst case scenario, £1000.

Road Tax & MOT - £300

Total Cost - £3600 Over 3 years.

Makes sense if you're not taking into account servicing, maintenance etc and just looking at the cost and residuals

£400 per year more for a worse car?

Doesnt make sense :)

Thats the thing, she doens't think its worse. Girls logic don't forget.

Well thats another thing, the C2 has its tax paid for, and will require 1 service over the 2 years and won't need any MOT's. With full warranty obviously.

Out of those two, the Fiesta, no question

Had both as hire cars and the Fiesta is a good car, the Ibiza just isn't. Granted, I drove the 1.2, but it had no power, handled badly yet had hard, badly damped suspension, nasty cheap interior, dreadful steering - just awful

I think I'd rather her have the Fiesta if I'm honest, and it will be down to me in the end :p

Why is it only going to be worth £1000 after 3 years?

Well that was worst case scenario, I havent a clue with used prices, but it will be 8-9 years old with around 60k on the clock, how much would you say it would be worth? Im trying to make the Fiesta look the better option financially so I do hope Im way out :D

EDIT : I just don't want her turning around in 2-3 years time for me to get all the blame with her car being worth less what I said, and having a money pit of a fiesta which has had nothing but problems since day one :o

Why not get a valuation for a 2002/02 (ie the first of 'your' shape) at 60k miles to give you an idea?

It's been a long day...

EDIT : Ok around the £2000 mark. Time to rework my figures. :)

The 12 year old Red Fiesta shaped POS sitting on my drive is still worth a grand for some bizarre reason. There's no way the Fiesta you're after will hit as low as £1000. The first of that shape Fiesta still goes for a couple of grand.

In fact, the Citroen might even end up being worth less at the end of your ownership!

Edit - just remembered you were talking about contract hire :)
