Nvidia partners discontinued GTX285 and GTX275

so what happens in mean-time - what do they sell ?

how far are we off genuinely GT300x in stores ?

nVidia will sell cards like the new Nvidia GT 220, not aimed at gamers but normal PC users, also hopefully the GTX300 series will be here sooner as nVidia no longer will sell the GTX200 series, so losing high end customers.

Lose sales opportunities perhaps, customers tend to buy what's there.

Just because Tesco closes a store to do a refit doesn't mean they lost all their customers for it. When it reopens customers will come along based on practicality and cost.

yes but if someone bought a 5870 now ...

the Nvidia equivalent would have to be a LOT better for someone to upgrade to it

if they were both released at same time and equivalent performance, maybe 50% would go to one, and 50% to the other

People will still be looking to upgrade systems as and when Nvidia gets a new top end card sorted.

That why I said lost sales opportunities, they're losing sales they could have made now to people upgrading now.

True buts whats the point having sales if each one loses you money?

That would be why it looks like they're throwing in the towel to some degree on the top end.

They don't feel they can compete in the current environment so they're going to save their money for the next round and let ATI take the high ground.

Don't worry guys.........These same cards will be released again very soon....

They just need some time to change the stickers to GTX 360 / GTX 375 / GTX 385 :p

LOL

get the old marker pens out :p

I m not suprsied tbh, as the GTX275 never was competitive with the HD4890, due to pricing, I guess they thought they would make a lose on it if they cut the price

So, bumpgate, check, Nvidia out of chipsets, check, massive massive delay after delay on the GT200 mid/low end, check, discontinuation of 285/275, check, EOL the 260GTX, Charlie said not for a month or so..... we'll see.

Horribly inaccurate that guy, horribly, infact pff, I see no reason for anyone to take him seriously.

I've said in other threads, he has a way about writing I can fully understand irks people, so? You can over get useful info from the Iraqi press minister, if you listen carefully, let alone someone giving you almost every story with cold hard numbers backing up his thinking and logic.

What fanboys really should realise, is the only people who blindly think Charlie is wrong, are those who can't understand the numbers he's trying to relay...... yes, basically, smart people can understand his numbers/analysis and think he's right. Not so smart people, don't get it, call him biased wrong and Nvidia hating, while all true, they still can't read the numbers that add up to him being correct.

His two most recent stories on Nvidia, I do admit, the first, was horribly long winded and could have been far better writen, the one on the cards EOL'ing hours later, is far far more consisely laid out and far better "writing", but no less/more accurate info.

Fact is too many people think press releases being published = journalism, he's one of the only journalists around.

I had ago over at the english [H] the other day on their stock story on the 5850, they got the launch date wrong(they assumed it was the same as the 5870), then they claimed poor availability because most were on pre-orders. As I suggested, a 5 min call to all the main guys, like OCUK, or even asking fatboy in his thread how many 5850's were sold could have got them hard numbers. Pre-order, means nothing, they could have sold millions on pre-order every day and still never "shown" as having stock. Its just lazy "reporting".

You do have to wonder how much longer the Nvidia only exclusive guys can hold out. XFX and several others turned ages ago because the GT200 series was a flop in terms of profit to them, even bigger flop now that they can't even sell them. Can you really see EVGA basing their entire next 2-4 months, solely, on more expensive slower parts in the £30-80 range, that they've never targeted before?

Think we'll be seeing EVGA making 5870's in no time flat, most of these guys were exclusive to get better prices on parts from Nvidia, IE promise to stay with them, get £5 per core or whatever. That deal seems rather hollow, when the cores aren't shipping at all :p

you would have to be a bit strange to buy a 275 for £175 or even worse a 285 for £250+ when the 5850 and 5870 utterly dominate at similar price points. Hell there's no reason even to buy a 260 now that the 5770 appears to be cheaper and about the same performance but with DX11 chucked in as well for good measure oh and cheaper to run/quieter I assume......

bring on the EVGA radeons and 10 year warranty :p

this don't suprsie me tbh, although them EOL ing the GTX260 did come to a bit of a shock

It is a sad day indeed =( I was looking to SLi my GTX 275. Looks like I won't be doing that anymore. It's going to cost too much =( Unless I can find a cheap one. I highly doubt the Zotac AMP! Edition will fall in price however across the net. As it is still reasonably fast. Damn Nvidia for screwing up. I will sit tight until they bring out Fermi, and see what it looks like. I want to see what they can actually come up with before deciding to switch or not.

As for BFG and EVGA, I feel sorry for them. They make wonderful products, but just can't sell anything now, as most people are jumping to ATi because the 58xx cards are so good at the price.

Then again, didn't ATi mess up a few years ago also. Just Nvidia's turn for some tough times I guess. Unless Fermi really is that good, in which case, maybe people will go back.

The work of a graphics card partner must be pretty boring.

Decide what mild overclock to use.
Decide what sticker to put on the fan.
Decide what kind of cyber-wizard / dragon to put on the box.

Anything else?

Why not sell your GTX 275 and pick up a 5850 or two? Will probably work out cheaper than SLI...

Not a bad idea. But I would like to sit and wait and see what Nvidia come up with in terms of gaming graphics with Fermi. They have claimed they will be able to almost, downgrade the top level Fermi, so it makes a better gaming graphics card (can't think of source currently, but I read it this morning on the net).

If Fermi is a flop, or it's so insanely expensive, I will end up looking towards the second generation ATi cards for DX11. Most probably in Crossfire.
