About a month ago I ordered a part for my camera off ebay with the value of about £50. Tehn about 2 weeks ago, I got the 'sorry you were out' note in the post. So the following day I went to the post office to pick it up. It wasn't in the office. so I returned a few days later. Still not in the office. third time lucky? No. They have lost it and don't know where it is.

I was told to phone customer services, which I just have. Well the customer servies is next to useless. It's all pre-recorded options with no humans to talk to. But there is a compensation process. However most of it mentions "if you are the sender" etc etc.

Should it be me that seeks the compnsation, or should it be the ebay seller, who then sends me out another item? What is the best way to proceed with this?

It should be the sender as it is him who has the "contract" with Royal Mail.
How he deals with it is really up to him, however as long as the package was insured for it's value then it shouldn't be too much to ask to have him send you another item out while he makes the claim.

Thanks guys. Thought as much, and I've just noticed on the claims form that it needs to be sender who fills it in. Lets hope he sends another one without too much hassle.

It wouldn't be wise to quote considering he's just earnt himself a 2 week suspension.

Makes sense.... i was only going to quote to point out it was a stoopid thing to say.

But your the boss... boss! :P

Back on thread yeah i would agree its down to the seller. If you had bought the item from say.... amazon or hmv would you contact the seller or the RM?

Sounds a bit like me this morning (only Citylink this time)

Called a company to see where my parcel was - it was posted on the 23rd of August.

They say 'Citylink tried to deliver on 28th August' and carded letterbox.
I say ' I was in all day 28th and no card here.'
They say 'Here's tracking number'

So I phone Citylink and after eventually managing to find the tracking number and delivery details - 'Yes we tried delivery on 28th and you weren't in'
I say : 'Yes I was - as I was sick - so where's the parcel now?'
Citylink say : 'Well we can check with the drivers now as they take a photo of your front door if they card your letterbox'
I say : 'That's good - what sort of door is it then'
They say : ' Brown - but drivers picture is a bit blurry'
I say : 'And how many windows does it have then'
(seeing as the door is nearly all glass with two massive windows'
Citylink say : 'Can't see any windows in the photo'
I say : 'Well the front door on this house is nearly all glass - in fact two big massive plates of glass'
Citylink say : ' Maybe he tried to deliver to the wrong address'
I say : 'But you just told me my address and name'
Citlyink say : 'Yes - maybe it was the wrong house.....OK - will you be in tomorrow'
I say : 'Yes - the same as the last 7 days waiting for this parcel to arrive'

Interesting really, but why should the sender have to replace the item when he's done everything on his side? You receiving the card means that the ball is now in the court of RM I would think. If I was the seller I'd be loathe to replace it.

Haha yep Citylink have blatantly lied to me on at least 3 different occasions, trying to say they attempted to deliver something and left a card. They most certainly did not!
Sometimes I wonder if they even bother loading it on to a van at the depot. Or if the driver is too lazy and wants to finish early and so doesn't bother to attempt a delivery

Oh I agree, which is why I've tried phoning RM etc, but it seems that the official way of doing it is for the seller to send a replacement and then claim the money back off RM. I used to think the RM were ok (have always been good with me, certainly better than other couriers), but the treatment and responses I have had over this percel have not impressed me at all. Certainly not what I would call good customer service.

The whole parcel/courier system in this country (and probably other countries) seems to archaic to me. Why can't all parcels have RFID tags, so tracking is automatic? That way the sender and recipient can see exactly where the parcel is and how long it is likely to take. And couldn't new houses be built with large boxes on the front for leaving parcels in (secured obviously)?

Would only work for stuff that only wasn't delivered because it was too big though, most stuff needs a signature. Could quite easily do it though, just have a box that you leave unlocked if you're expecting a parcel and it gets sealed by postie/courier once your precious goods are in it

I'd say that delivery is not complete until you have the items in hand - being carded is a "failed delivery" by definition.
So the item is still with the RM - senders hassle I'm afraid.
But be nice in your conversations with the seller - see what options he is going to give you.

Well I have been emailing the seller back and forward, and the latest I have;

Hi, I just contacted my local post office today. There is no result of return or anything like that from England. I was really frustrated, but there is nothing they could help. They promised that they will keep tracking. If there is no delivery information from England till December, they will issue a refund to me. Once I received a refund or return of goods, I will issue a full refund to you. Thanks.

Am I right in believing he should send me out a replacement, and then he can sort out his issue with RM. I'm sure as the buyer I shouldn't have to wait until December to maybe get a replacement item. :/

I had the same problem over some scum bag selling me a 21" crt a few years back, it was damaged and he couldnt be arsed raised a claim with royal mail (or did and never told me!)

They won't even talk to you as it's the senders responsibilty, i'd get onto ebay/paypal and complain and they will drive him to resolve it for you faster.

Was it posted from abroad?

RM usually states a month before claiming; until December as seller claims seems excessive. It should be his responsibility to refund you/resend you another as soon as the month (if it is a month) is over.

I've got a similar story going in that direction now, I'll follow this with interest.

Ebay item delivered whilst I was out, I got a note through the door. I've been down the RM sorting office 3 times now and it's still not there. They reckon it's just due to the strike backlog and it should arrive back at some point. Very annoying. Hopefully it will turn up and I won't have to contact the seller, as they've done everything right so far it's just RMs screw up.
