Thailand - yeah yeah, everyone goes there now, not what it used to be, but it's still an absolutely stunning country

i misread the op. my apologies. Go anyway!

www.gapyear.com is a good forum for planning.

I've just returned from 8 months away, I booked my RTW flight tickets with STA and then winged everything else as I went along. Also heard Flight Centre is quite good for cheap flights, especially beating quotes from other companies.

Trailfinders is another.

STA aswell has online route creator on their website.

Thailand is amazing, there are many non touristy parts still. make sure you do tonsai in krabi. Pai (spelling?) is also supposed to be amazing, i didnt get time to go
Laos

If (when) I travel again i want to go to Brazil and Japan. Also something totally different like antarctic

I want to go to Japan and go to a 5* Ryoko Hotel for a few days. Get away from it all. It'll cost me and arm and a leg (£700 a night) but looks like the ultimate in luxary getaways

£700 a night? Screw that. Much more relaxing in the middle of a thai jungle in a hut costing £1.50 a night. Nothing beats hearing snakes things on the roof. Then getting up to see jungle and sheer rock face...then going and climbing it

Does anyone know how easy it is to travel across America, say from LA to Miami to NYC......is it feasible/cheap to do on coach etc rather than paying for flights?

I got a greyhound from san fran to LA. It wasnt much at all, i think about 35 or $40.

Great experience stopping in bakersfield and fresno! 90% of the people on the bus were black and the other 10% white gangsta wannabes. I had a guy isat in front of me who looked like snoop dog who kept offering me 'twinkies' I accepted and he had some of my beef jerkey. That bus trip was one of the great memories of USA.

You dont remember the 'normal' stuff like seeing the statue of liberty or battery park, you remember things like crossing Brooklyn bridge into Brooklyn then getting the subway the wrong and going deeper into Brooklyn by yourself and not knowing where the hell you are!

Travelling alone is fun

look on backpacking and travelling forums. and for america places like digihitch might be a good way to get from west to east and vice versa. could imagine it being quite amusing too

I hope you don't think I'm being rude... but how old are you?

I would love to go travelling to different parts of the world on my own... but I'm a little nervous and don't want to be stamped as a loner :p Did you not experience anyone being a bit different when they found out you were travelling alone?

I'll go with you...defeats the point though really.

I am itching to see East Asia, the South Pacific, UAE, East-Coast USA, Canada & Mainland Europe (AKA a lot of the planet) and I know that sooner rather than later is the best time to do it, just finding someone who wants to do the same as you is hard work.

I'd feel alienated if I went alone, but I'm sure you'd meet people along the way - just not anybody you can talk to about it and any point in later life saying "remember when we went to ___"

I'll go somewhere soon, going to be applying for jobs abroad so that could be the start :)

Think i've decided on a route anyway from the STA Travel site.....

England -> LA (24 days) -> Panama City (7 Days) -> Sao Paulo (10 days) -> Buenos Aires (11days) -> Auckland (7 days) -> Australia (28 days) -> Singapore (10 days) -> Thailand (25 days) -> Abu Dhabi (1 day) -> England...... Total trip time around 4 months.

Not exactly sure on the exact staying times at each place. Basically given myself like 3 and a bit weeks over LA way so I can get down to Vegas, see California, and San Fran a bit and maybe do a couple excursions etc.

Then flight down Sao Paulo, which included a free stop at Panama, so chose to have 7 days down in Mexico, then flight down to Sao Paulo in Brazil, basically decided to make my own way Buenos Aires so I have around 3 weeks in total to see and do stuff split between the two.

Then from Buenos Aires I've chose a flight to Sydney which included a free stop over in Auckland which I thought would be nice to spend around a week there. When I get to Sydney i've allowed myself 4 weeks to get around and have a gander, and will be leaving from Perth so i'll get to see the East and West.
From Perth I've arranged a flight to Singapore where i've then arranged to get myself from there to Koh Samui and then onto Bangkok for my flight to Abu Dhabi (which was also a free stop on the way home). Planning to have around 35 days to see Singapore and work my way up through Thailand.
Then just a day in Abu Dhabi as I don't know if there is actually anything to do there, then home.

Obviously the dates and times in places are rough as I might decide I want longer in some than others. I'm only really worried about Oz and US as they will work out a fair bit more expensive than the other places, and i'm even toying with cutting out all of North America completely and spending a bit more time in South America, and possibly going to India instead after Thailand. But hopefully I should be able to save up a decent wedge of money.

Anyone any comments or advice on the route i've taken?

25. was 23/24 when travelling. I was supposed to go with a mate but he took ages then pulled out because didnt have the money. I met people from all over the world who were travelling alone. Alone you soon learn to try and talk to strangers or be bored and alone.
I remember in Bangkok in the hostel i got talking to 5 or 6 people who were travelling together and they talked to me and had a few beers and stuff but i always knew they were thinking "why is he travelling alone for 7 months"
Around 2 weeks later i saw them at the full moon party in phangan. By this time i had met a load of people, some english, some dutch and 2 israeli. We were all having a fantastic time and i thought the 5 looked a bit bored.
3 of my mates mates went travelling a few months before me and after 3 weeks met other people and went their seperate ways.

Anyway, im sure if you go alone or with friends you will work out whats best and if you can live hand in hand with other people all the time

10 days in Singapore?? I could only manage 2 (1 night) Its just a big city with loads of shopping malls. If you like that type of stuff then its good i suppose, otherwise i would rather do 10 more days in thailand doing some different islands or some diving or whatever. A 5 day open water diving course including accomodation is £150. You will easily spend that in Singapore on accomodation and food alone. (My accom was £30 a night in Singapore)
