Ok. Need to see which Be Quiet! Dark Power Pro PSU I am going to buy in the next few days.

However, I am still confused why what I need exactly. Not sure if the 850W would do, or if I need the 1000W.

The plan is to be eventually running the following:

i7 @ 4GHz
Gigabyte-UD5
6GB Corsair RAM @ 1600MHz
Either GT300 series in SLi or 5xxx series in Crossfire
Around 4 hard drives
DVD/CD-RW drive
BD-ROM drive
Fan controller with LCD display
Sound card
4 case fans on the controller
3 case fans not on the controller (PSU)
2 CPU cooler fans

Around 4-5 USB devices that are powered by the system

The Be Quiet! website recommends a 1000W PSU for the above, and the extreme power supply calculator here: http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp, says around 900W for the above.

However, I do know some people don't trust these calculators. I want it to be ok for the next gen of cards, and obviously to last me a good few years without having to change my PSU on a big system upgrade.

What would you guys go for in this case? The 850W Be Quiet, or the 1000W Be Quiet.

I would say 750W, this is because it will save you money, but the fact is I don't think you would use any more at any one time. Is it likely your system will be at full load, including graphics cards and CPU, aswell as fans on full and all USB devices in all at the same time? If yes then maybe an 850 would be better suited, I think 1000W is too much.

850 watts would see you clear for a long time i had the be quite 850 watt very nice and shiney, there's also a better psu by corsair 850watt which i got now.

Gone from a be quiet 750w to corsair HX 850W psu and find the corsair is better may be worth a look.

I just ran that PSU calculator, picked i7 920, 1.3v 4GHz, 2 5870s in Crossfire and all the extras you specified, totaled up to a shade over 600W. What did you pick to get 900W?

Personally I would recommend the 750W Corsair HX if you want a 5870 CF rig. If you want a GT300, don't pick the PSU now - we don't have details of their power characteristics yet. However, I would be very suprised if a HX850 couldn't handle 2 in SLI.

CPU would be at gaming loads. As well as graphics cards of course. System fans are usually on full. I prefer cooling over silence. Usually play music, games or on Skype, so don't notice fan noise much.

What do you mean by "better"? I have asked people who own each of these PSUs. One has said that the Be Quiet! is excellent quality. The other that the Corsair is excellent quality. I have simply decided to go for the Be Quiet! PSU. It seems to be a bit more modular than the Corsair, and also has the ability to hook case fans directly into it.

it's just the wattage I am not sure on.

ive owned both. the corsairs are better built, thats for certain. But the be quiets are by no means poorly built and are perfectly capable psu's.

I added in the 30% capacitor aging also with it. That may be what pushed it up a bit. As well as the high performance fans. The money isn't really a massive issue, and between the 850W and 1000W there isn't a huge price difference.

I'm picking the PSU now, simply because I want a reliable one, that won't blow up on my recent investment =p And one that actually fits in my case, instead of having to be pushed back inside the case creating a mess.

At the end of the day, no harm will come from not using that extra 150W will it? I'd rather be safe than sorry =)

What do you mean by "better"

corsair HX 850W psu was recently tested by CPC and came out at a whooping 89% efficiency at full load; the Be Quiet! usually come in at a rock solid 87% when idle or fully loaded

The Be Quiet! is a little bit more modular for my liking. Especially the ability of connect case fans to the PSU to dispel hot air out the case after shutdown. I have definitely decided on the make. Not that I don't think the Corsairs aren't good. I have read reviews for both Corsair and Be Quiet! PSUs and they are both rated very highly.

I think, I will order the 1000W PSU. Sounds like a good PSU to me. I like the fan connectors, and the modularity of it.

Thanks for input however guys =)

Well you got plenty of head room on that, a generous calculation would say 700watts if you used every last component at full wack. 850 would do the job and leave you with loads of head room. considering power consumption is going down the better the tech 1000 watts would never be utilized really. but then less stress is always a good cure for longer lasting equipment :D even if you do shell a little more out for it. :p

Exactly my idea. Less stress is a good idea. I want this PSU to last a while. And I don't mind shelling out the extra twenty quid or so. I would rather be safe than sorry =)

I am torn between BeQuiet and Corsair myself, the fact that Corsair gives a 7 year warranty and does not go for bling but function is cool, and I have heard people speak of capacitor whine on BeQuiet?

well i can say i have have both psu but regarding the whine i never even heard the psu running or any whining nosie, dead quite

well to be honest i only went for the corsair as its warrenty is longer either psu is good i like them both, the fan unit on the psu is fairly good but the fans you only get four slots for them which is controlled only by the psu, so the rest would need to go into the mobo or controller.
