New drivers HD 58xx and 57xx series

The (.11 betta so far for me are running ok by do appear to have the nasty habit of sending the 5870 to 100%fan on driver load (it does come back down

I find the new drivers better my 5850 max everything at 1920x1200 in crysis gets 30fps min 25fps now :D with no lag

I got my 5870 yesterday and am in the middle of a temporary nightmare with it, My current OS is XP, I'm waiting for a crucial firmware update to my SSD before I install Win7 and it seems that AMD have decided they don't really like Windows XP any more.

The latest 9.9 on the game.amd site simply tells me that my it doesn't find any compatible hardware with the driver version I am installing. I've managed to get hold of the 8.66 RC7 XP drivers from the MSI site and installed but I have no idea how old this is, any pointers ?

Cant believe they haven't got a working XP driver out on their site yet

yes yes we know but its also the most used OS at this time, Besides like I said I'm waiting to install W7 on the SSD and don't want to do it now only to have to do it again when I flash the FM of the drive.

I just got my 5850 today and am still on XP, does this mean I won't be using it until Win7, are there no XP drivers at all not even the 9.9's?

well i get 74.5 on FIXED benchmark with no AA and same with AA 4x and 8x...

also i ran the gpu at 1000mhz and the fps didn't go up.

Is it possible the benchmark is severely CPU limited, so gpu speed doesn't bump fps at all, and extra AA is simply using the spare gpu power?

Never used/seen the Res 5 benchmark so no clue.

How come you have to reinstall your OS after you flash your SSD?

It can depend, depending on the firmware it can need to rewrite the way it distributes data(newer algorithums) or need more space for files it uses to keep track of wear leveling data, etc, etc. So you can lose all the data on the drive after a flash, but if you flash you will know if you'll lose data beforehand.

You don't have to upgrade your flash drives, and you don't necessarily need any of the features they can add, trim and other things, really only effects benchmarking numbers, real world the drives just don't slow down that much.

But pretty much anyone with a SSD has big backup mechanical drives, not a huge deal to back up a small ssd now and then if you want to upgrade.

Hell, I prefer my raided SSD's, even if I went for lower end mechanical drives I haven't had anything less than a 500GB array to back up if I needed to resinstall windows/change mobo's/etc/etc. Last raid 0array was 1280gb, though most of it was empty, far easier to backup and small drive I keep all non essential data off anyway :p
