Nokia N900

I rarely use fingers with n810, it has a stylus and a stylus housing within the unit itself. Making it better and more accurate. Especially seeing as I am using a modified on screen keyboard from standard.

Fine if you want a pda, but this is touted as a phone and the GUI has been revamped to this end. If I have to use a stylus (for anything) (a la Wwindows Mobile) this phone is a no no, ut from the reviews it looks good for fingers.

Disliking the fact that they put phone capabilities into it. Prefer my current setup of a cheap crap phone, and 810. To me it was always a pda/laptop that you can fit into your pocket. And the spec upgrade is aimed at just that, was a mistake to shove a phone chip into it.

However, I will eventually buy it (when the price is less retarded), it is a much needed upgrade over the 810. Just the price they got wrong, for that much, I can get a decent laptop that will do so much more and still have enough left for a cheap phone via which I could use the laptop.

I mean, it runs linux, it is clearly a geeky toy, and not something actually usable for general public, as lets face it, linux based products are not known for its amazing UI.

Nokia aren't touting this as a phone. They always refer to it as a "mobile computer".

They actually called the N95 a mobile computer when it was released too. At any rate the N900 is optimised for touch.

I almost bought an N810 but it just was too big for general use. If you are a linux monkey Id see why one would buy it. Why woudnt you like the fact that it has additional capabilities (including GSM)? Surely ubiquitous data is a good thing - and the GUI looks rather good too.:)

Fixed that one for ya ;)

Problem with n810 for me is two fold, limited performance and battery life.

***** Warning, 810 complaints *****
It requries you to convert (down scale) videos before it can play them without any lost frames or audio lag, while most webpages are absolutely fine, some which are designed in purely flash or silly amount of java script, handle like a fat man on a unicycle, you got to wait for him to arrive and then make a complete mess while he is panting from being too tired. It just doesn't work, my main use of 810 now days, is music player (there are better and cheaper), note taking, gps and as remote control.

Which is where the problem comes in, battery life. Playing music, only lasts about 6-7 hours, pending how many you skip, if you want to use the net, at the same time, then you get even less.

Now, that could be because I installed one too many apps on there, and one may be spinning needlessly. But even then, to me it just seems not enough time to use it properly for what is essentially is meant to be a laptop on the move.

***** End *****

N900, seems to adress the performance issue, and that is a huge plus from me, I mean technology wise, it is one lean, mean, pocket size machine. And at least according to the wiki, the battery life seems mahoosive, however their claimed usage hours to me seem a bit too unrealistic. And adding a phone chip that is essentially always on state, does not strike me as a good idea for the battery life.

I would much rather have a random cheap phone that is used as a phone/modem, with hours of available "talk" time, with a separate pda, then have both, only to loose both functions at the same time when the battery runs out. It also means you are not a "slave" to contracts, without a need in having the latest and greatest phone, you can easily just use a cheap contract on a cheap phone.

When I moved house and ended up without the net for a few weeks, n810 with my phone as a modem and O2's unlimited bandwidth bolt on for just £7.50 a month, made it very nice and easy to use, 512 kbps anywhere? Due to bluetooth linking, I didn't have to go find a spot with good reception and sit there, to use the net, just plonk a phone there on its own, and be comfy browsing elsewhere.

While I can see one gadget to rule them all approach as the holy grail, practically I am not sure it is feasable per say. And what about the camera? What is the point in it? This, again shortens the battery life, and if you want a picture of yourself, would you really be handing over a £450-500 phone to a stranger?

Hmmm looks nice as usual...but i find with Nokia its all style and hardly any substance...last week i was in the nokia shop down in regent st and having a play with the n97...nice phone but wasnt that impressed with it in all honesty...it didnt wow as i thought it might....found the keyboard to be pretty useless ie wasnt that easy to type on as i thought it might.

Ill probably have a look when this is released but so far it hasnt wowed me much from the vids i have seen...it still will be style over substance although the new OS seems interesting....the keyboard doesnt look all that...prefer the blackberry keyboard as they are much easier to type on.

But meh ill stick with Blackberry for the time being...they do everything i want without much fuss.

Same as I posted before really, I love the look, speed and usage - the killer for me will be the apps. Much as I hate the iphone, it has raised the bar for all phones and now I want a phone that can have a massive range of apps available. I will wait and see how the app store looks after a couple of months, if it shows promise I will get one, otherwise Im going for an android phone as I have seen some amazing apps..
I have been a windows mobile user since the original SPV phones (work buy my phones) and I have finally given up on WM and want something less business orientated and more suited to my lifestyle.
I'm still not seeing any real life battery usage figures yet - its too early, that too will dictate how good this is..

Does look very good though...

Everyone knows the N97 was a dog since inception - the N86, N95 8Gb, E72, now those are decent phones. Personally I hate qwerty keyboards and the N900 looks rather fat, however the OS just looks so damn slick - Im not sure Ill be able to resist!.. Maybe just maybe Nokia have it sorted (then again we have had our hands burnt a few times)

You obviously need to give it some time for the apps to come out - when the iphone was released there were zero apps. Applications will be ported over from linux, N810 and a lot of applications have been created already. I have an i7500 (android) its just too slow/battery hungry for my liking (Ive had it for 2 months and Im selling) - I hope the N900 is a decent alternative at last. I havent been happy with a phone since the N95 8Gb/N82 really.

Im getting all excited for this now :D
I went into the Nokia shop in Manchester the other day and they said they are expecting it towards the end of this month!

And to all you people 'dissing' it by saying there will be naff all apps for it....just like with the iphone you need to give it time before a substantial amount of apps are available. When this sort of phone comes out there is a pig POOF then a cloud of smoke and when the cloud settles a sparkly new highly stocked app store

Anyway, im only half way through the first video and i'm very impressed so far. And 'lol' at him trying to find the on button :D

To be fair though the on button is usually at the top with Noks, I would have been momentarily confused too. :p

If only it was capacitive... does look sweet though, very intuitive.

Just watched the video and am well impressed with it, i want one :D

Like other have said if decent and varied apps get made for it, and we get updates to stuff like flash, mms etc i think it could be a very, very good device. Definitely think its gonna be my new phone, just wish there was a definite release date.
