Nokia N900

Just watched the video and am well impressed with it, i want one :D

Like other have said if decent and varied apps get made for it, and we get updates to stuff like flash, mms etc i think it could be a very, very good device. Definitely think its gonna be my new phone, just wish there was a definite release date.

Here are the current released applications (in addition to the ones currently installed).

I quite like the fact that Skype and fring are already ready. Flash is already working fully and will be updated to 10.1 later on in the year apparently.

Good maemo site/forum here:

I love the way they conned us all with the N97 as the 'flagship' that lasted all of 2 months before it was superceded. Great. It doesn't even work.

And we are stuck with them for 18 months..

Shaping up to be a really interesting phone, was going to get myself a palm Pre but I think I shall hold off now till this has been out a few weeks. Those videos posted earlier really excited me purely because it looks like a nice, easy to use, uncluttered Nokia interface, which makes a change !

Just been watching another video of a SNES emulator running on the 900, being controlled by a wii remote over bluetooth and using the TV out to play on a big screen. If this is the kind of developement to be expected I think this phone could be brilliant.

Yeah, I'd be pretty gutted if I'd just bought an N97, especially the amount of money they seemed to pour into touting it to be the best. Billboards advertising it everywhere a few months back, couldn't walk down any street without seeing an N97 advert.

I take it you got one? :(

That looks AWESOME!

If that is the sort of direction apps can take then its going to be very interesting. Im sure with this amount of flexibility people will make apps for this phone!

The problem with nokia before was the symbian OS was very limiting. You had to even certificate apps before you could install them, thats how restrictive the whole thing was.

But seeing this emulator, it even retains the good looking gui that the phone has about itself.

I hope nokia have really thought about this phone and its doesnt turn out like the n97.

N97 was always a dog, reading the reviews I avoided it, I do feel for you though.

i don't get all the N97 hatred. i mean, the N900 is clearly superior but my experience with a friends N97 has been very good.

No-one was "conned" into buying anything. You paid your money without waiting a short time to see the major issues of the device, and considering 90% of Nokia phones are released with buggy firmware, this must have been a risk you took knowingly. Reviews were also not ecstatic at launch.

If someone bought a crap car in Motors and said they'd been "conned", you'd spend two pages digging up the most caustic remarks possible about how much of an idiot they were.

I need to stop watching this thread, after seeing google wave and the snes emulator videos, I found myself working out which shares in my portfolio to sell to buy this now
Thing is, dont need it, really shouldn't sell shares to buy it, but want something techy, and something new - its been a while......

hate tech sometimes - it has a way of shortcircuiting my common sense, Im telling myself, dont buy, wait for the reviews and the only thing stopping me is that even if I order it now, I won't get it for a while yet, so I might as well wait...

itchy web fingers...

It was billed as Nokias flagship device. I expected to get at least 6-9 months out of as this. I bought the N95 on the same advertising and it latest years as a top flight device. The N97 is full of fundamental flaws which rather than fix, Nokia instead put effort into replacing it despite the fact most buyers of the N97 are tied into the phone for 18+ months.

In what way does this make Nokias behaviour acceptable?

If someone bought a crap car in Motors and said they'd been "conned", you'd spend two pages digging up the most caustic remarks possible about how much of an idiot they were.

If somebody bought a brand new Audi which was just released as the new range topping car but had inherent flaws and then was superceded just 3 months later, you wouldnt find me calling them an idiot.

I honestly love mine. Signal issues aside, everything else is perfect for my requirements and I dont miss the iphone one bit.

I do accept that depending on your requirements that some of its bugs will cause some serious issues but the stability on V12 is spot on and V20 should hopefully improve upon that.

It is however a little dissapointing the Nokia would announce the N900 shortly after releasing the N97 which would at least have given people the choice.

If the announcment had been further from the release of the N97 then I'd probably would have just thought 'ah technology moves on' but it was obviously just about retail ready as the N97 was shipping.

Be truthful though, the N900 WILL ship with a shed load of bugs which Nokia will be fixing months after release.

Maybe it will be us N97 owners laughing at the N900 adopters when that time comes...............can't see it though.

I think nokia are at least doing something - people complain that its delayed and that they would be happy for it to come out, then when its buggy because its rushed out there are more complaints.

They are at least addressing issues ie lens scratch and gps antenna fix (free) and ver 2.0 out within the next week (hopefully).

Although this phone is a pain in the £"$", its still one of the better models avail.

While there is no such thing as bug free code, n900, is essentially simply a linux kernel, just a bit optimised for omap cpu. There are not that many bugs for it, as it is not a proprietary software.

Last night updated to the latest firmware on n810, it uses a 2.6.21 kernel. Latest stable kernel is 2.6.31.4, so its not that ancient, just 10 minor revisions, but publically tested and maintained.

I love mine as well. It's a fundamentally fantastic handset but it has a couple of MAJOR bugs (The signal issue is one of them) which make the phone unusable at times. Nokia dont seem to be doing anything about it.

Apart from the multiple firmware updates and 2.0 firmware upgrade soon..

Im not excusing Nokia for releasing buggy phones but to say they have done nothing isnt strictly true.

The N97 is a fundamentally underpowered phone hence the consternation when it was released (along with the bugs) - it was a Nokia to avoid from the outset.

The thing is you buy a phone not because its flagship, but for its features - I have never bought a phone because 'its the best' that simply doesnt make sense. I understand your dissapointment at a better phone being released but Im not sure thats Nokias 'fault'. The way mobile tech is moving the moment you buy a phone its 'dated'. The N920 will be out in 6 months (thinner non qwerty maemo phone)- do you want to hold off from the N900 for that??
