Ok, my contract has just been renewed with Orange. The last phone I had was the Nokia N82. It was a good little phone, played movies well but it had a habbit of crashing/locking up.
So, I went into my local Orange store and came out with a Nokia 5800. I must say this is the worst phone ive even owned. Its laggy, there are hardly any apps/games out for it and im not impressed with the video playback (15fps, come on).

So what would the good people on here recommend?
I hear rave reviews about the HTC Hero, is it as good as an iPhone minus Apple? Whats the media playback like?
The Toshiba TG01 caught my eye as well, I got told not to go for it since it was new. Is it any good?

Also, Ive only just renewed my contract, so is there a cooling off period? Just incase I need to get away from Orange (been with them ages now). Should I encounter any resistance from Orange about wanting to swap phones? I feel ive been mis-sold this phone, to me it really is a POS and I want to be rid of it ASAP.

As far as I am aware, the software on the TG01 is a bit shoddy, and nowhere near as good as HTCs efforts in masking Windows Mobile 6.1

The Hero, on the other hand, is a very good handset, as I'm sure the giant thread on here will confirm.

I was an N82 user but currently own an i7500 (android) - I feel in the same predicament as you. The Hero/i7500 are a bit slow/have a v poor camera compared to my trusty N82. Personally I think the N900 looks like the best upgrade at the moment (fast, good camera seemingly decent OS). The TG01 uses windows phone 6.5 which is dire, Id avoid personally.

Hero Slow?? Mine isnt slow and theCamera aint the best on the hero but its far from bad. The W6.5 isn't dire either. fair it aint pretty but it is a good base for some fancy GUI to sit on top of.

The Hero's CPU just isnt quick enough for me personally I was v disappointed with it. I guess its all subjective of course. The camera compared to the N82 is dire, no flash too. The point is, moving from an N82 I use the camera a lot, Kodiak may be the same (he may not of course).

Windows Mobile 6.5 is a spruced up WM 6, ie awful. http://gizmodo.com/5374876/windows-mobile-65-review-theres-no-excuse-for-this

Clearly not used either much. If you want a decent camera then use a bloody camera. i have yet to find any phone that takes decent pictures. Looking at the N82 samples online it is another one that cant take pictures properly. Cant see what your grumble is with the Hero other than no flash after viewing the N82 pics

WM6.5 OS isnt pretty granted as previously said but its fully functional and a good solid base. have you used it or had some time spent using it properly? (i dont think you have) or just mocking it for the sake of it? I have both and would dearly love a mix of the both in certain ways. I find it hard you mocking either as you use a simple nokia.

If you go out a lot and are out and about, carrying a camera and a phone just isnt convenient. The N82 is more than a sufficient camera in this regard. I simply dont believe you when you say you think the N82 cant take pictures properly - utter tosh - its one of the best mobile phone cameras, but anyway.. I own an android i7500 not an N82 at the moment..

WM6.5 is a poor OS, read all the reviews - its still an outdated OS with a bit of polish on top. Windows Phone 7 when it comes out could have real promise on the other hand.

I am a vociferous mobile phone tart so try/own multiple different mobiles, especially of late - I havent been able to replace my N95 8gb adequately. I believe the N900 will do so.
