Hi All,

Title says it all really.

A friend of mine has £150 to spend on a gfx card. He is not too bothered about ati or nvidia but does have an AMD setup at the mo.

PLease can you guys in the know post the best nvdia for the price, the best ati for the price and thenthe best overall.

Your time and effort is much appreciated.

Thanks

how about the new ati radeon hd5770 around the £125 price. its about same as a 4870 and 4890 on some games, with features like dx11 and eyefinity and low power.

I agree that the new features and DX11 are cool, but these cards just don't have the raw power their price suggests. The 5770 costs as much as a 4890 but doesn't perform at the level of a 4870 in most games.

This card would be my suggestion (ATI btw).

This nvidia card is comparable to the above in performance, but it is a bit more expensive. This Nvidia card is the best you can get for within your budget.

I would like to point out that there is a HUGE gulf atm between £125 and £200 performance (read HD 5770 vs 5850) and that the HD 5850 while costing more is giving you better performance per £.

recently upgraded my 4670 crossfire setup for a sparkle gtx 275 on offer for £150.

very happy with it
just played through new batman game and it looks amazing

Probably a cheap 4890 honestly. Next year DX 11 might be a major thing, but if you are buying the card to play todays titles.... and want decent solid performance then the 4890 isn't bad.

Either that or the 57x0 series.

Glad i spotted this thread,as i'm looking to buy a new gfx in that price range.the only thing i wasn't sure of is the need to buy a new cpu for certain ones.

hi, i am in search of a new card in this price range too. i have looked at cards u suggest. but a friend told me that i shoiuld consider the radeon hd 3870x2,
any advice?

Weren't the 5770/5750 reviewed as $100/129 cards? I've seen different prices but haven't really looked at the review. AH just checked $159/129, which should be only £115-120 inc vat with a 1.6 exchange rate.

At £115, they are very good, theres a couple games it beats the 285gtx aswell as the 4980, but they are few and far between and often performance is not nearly as close, but its not nearly bad and it has VERY competitive minimum framerates compared to the 48XX series and the 260-285gtx, largely because of the increased rops, its still bandwidth limited and overclocking it, may well see it be a fantastic card as I assume as it becomes less bandwidth limited the combination of 800 ever so slightly better shaders, DX11 and most importantly, the 24 rops make it a great base raw horsepower card. But thats why its so cheap, it would seem a better deal tbh, if AMD have been a little less enthusiastic in the price war, realistically the 4890 should never have gone below £170, the 4870 never below £140 and the 4850 never below £100, which would make the 5770 a ridiculous bargain at £115-120.

I still think its the card to get and will be better and better as new games release and as dx11 drivers improve.

the 3870x2 was a great card, but right now realistically, theres just as good performing single core cards that will use a LOT less power, idle and load, less noise and just be much smaller and less issues without crossfire. I wouldn't even consider the 3870x2 now unless it was stupidly cheap, even then its a hard sell.

I'd go with the 5770, because assuming your friend doesn't upgrade much, in 2-3 years in newer games the 5770 is likely to provide better performance and a better experience than similar cards at similar price points now. You also get a very much lower power card in idle and load compared to similarly priced/performance cards from last generation.

At this point unless theres an uber deal to clear out stocks on previous AMD/Nvidia parts, I wouldn't go last gen at all.

+1

Quite a few reviews for the 5770/5750 indicate in most games they don't perform as well as a 4890. So 4890 for me if i was buying one now.

Drunkenmaster I'm not sure which reviews you were looking at but the 5770 is exactly the same as a 4890 but on a 40nm process with DX11 and with gimped memory bandwidth.
It has the same SP count (800), the same ROP (16) and TMU count (40)...

It does not perform better than the 4890 or GTX 285 in any situation.

after now looking at some reviews, bearing in mind, i have a amd phenom x2 550 black, 4gb kingston hiper x ddr2 pc 8500. no psu yet. ad no mobo yet. i have need for speen shift here and want to run it on high-max settings, what card u reccomend? was gonna get the asus 4870 matrix. but i have no concept of how this will perform

change of direction totaly. want the nvidia gtx 275 now, got great reviews and spec, good price i think, i just hope it plays nfs on max settings, can any1 advise pls
