Windows 7 Annoyances

It´s a real pain to change the mouse polling rate for gaming - I gave up with Win 7 after half of the programs decided to just not open for me for some really odd reason. I must have installed x64 about 5 times with different disks and x86 a few times straight from technet to no success.

I really don`t understand whats happening. Back to vista!

None so far, well not W7 fault anyway.

Still waiting for Punkbuster for a proper client, some games work, some don't. Oher than that don't think I've had any problems.

Also when a window is not in focus it is extremely difficult to see which file has been selected. But this is mainly due to the colours in the default windows theme.

And the stupid blue menubar that I can't change the colour of.

I'm sure there's more but they are the ones off the top of my head. Very happy with Win7 overall though.

Are you talking about the blue task bar? I've changed mine to black and don't have a blue one. You can change the windows default theme too.

One of the VERY annoying things I have found is the network activity indicator. In vista they removed the individual nics and now in 7 they have taken away the activity light so you can't see if the internet is doing anything!

For example, in the old days of XP I could look at the NIC inducation lights for my wireless card and also my network card and see them flashing away so I knew if something was downloading OK and hadn't hung. I could also hover over it and see how much has been downloaded.

I've installed a network gadget in the sidebar to see current network activity, but why not have it as an option to view individual nics in the taskbar or to turn on the network activity light. It's not as if it caused any problems :(

I have a MS Intellimouse optical mouse. And for some reason, every couple of minutes, it's as though the mouse loses it's connection to the PC. It only seems to happen when its being moved, and what'll happen is it will suddenly stop moving, teh PC will make teh noise it makes for when a usb device has been removed, half a second later the mouse will then start moving again, and teh PC will make teh noise it makes for when a usb device has been attached to teh system. Never had this problem in any other windows OS.

Also, a long standing issue i've had with this mouse, even when i first got it. I'll be playing a FPS like COD4 for example, then the cursor will either go upwards or downwards and start spinning around. Hartd to explain, but those who have encountered this issue will know what i'm talking about.

Not quite, I like to use a quite dark theme in windows if possible, I'd ideally like to get explorer a similar colour the one I use in opera, this is what I mean ......

i don't have any gripes really, i miss certain features of Vista/Xp but its just because you have to relearn..

That's exactly how I feel. I was still stuck on XP but decided to give Win7 a real go and not just whine about things being changed from XP. I'm glad I did as I absolutely love it now. Couldn't imagine going back.

Windows logs on to a temporary profile on a random basis. It seems to happen on some installs (not machines) more than others. E.g. the Quad I've just given to my father never did it for me, but has started doing it since I reinstalled it for him

It happened in Vista, so no excuse not to have fixed this.

usually this happens when a hard drive is on the way out...

I do wish Microsoft would release 'tweak ui' for vista and 7 mind.

maybe someone will make one, the XP64 one is 3rd party, and it's exactly the same as the MS one :)

No "up" button in explorer really annoys me!
oh and having "my computer" at the bottom of all the quick links to locations in the left pane of explorer, meaning i have to scroll to the bottom to get to my 2nd drive.

That could be one cause Bledd.

Don't think so for mine. Reason being is that I've installed Win7 a helluva lot over the last few months on my main box. A few installs ago I was seeing this regularly say 1 in 5 boots, on the last 2 installs nothing. Brand new SSDs - so I'd expect to have seen more symptoms if they were failing.

I use Stroke-it for mouse gestures now because of this, so Rightclick-up is now the Up button.

For the other I have the favourites point to the 10 of my most used folders, as favourites is usually first on that list.

seems strange not had that issue on all the boxes i have installed on, and just did 4 laptops at work, you sure you have the final build and they are all patched up? also have you googled the error and found others with the same issue?

Definitely got the final build - fully patched.

Paul Thurrott (I know people either love or hate him) was spouting on about it being a known issue in Vista, which had been resolved in 7. But clearly it hasn't been.

Like my father I suspect most people live with it - and put it down to a quirk - after all it doesn't cause any problems and is resolved at next logon. By my estimation it's probably about 1 in 20 installs that seem to suffer from it. You never know, if those 4 laptops are for users in your company, then maybe they will have the problem and you'll never find out about it.

Not sure 100% if this is it, but this KB article is similar or related. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/947242

ok dude fair enough, nasty one and would bug the hell out of me, i presume its network login it effects and not stand alone pc's?

Local logins on a workgroup, not a domain.

For me the most annoying thing was that until Thurrot mentioned it, I'd never seen or heard of it on Vista or 7. The guy must be a jinx LOL :D

Still no multi-monitor task bar. I don't want to run Ultramon for more years until they fix this!

About the only thing that springs to mind as annoying. The taskbar itself takes some getting used to, but, ive found making icons smaller and then pinning my most used apps gets it just how I want it.
