Somewhere near the main area seafront etc / town nothing too expensive was going to go to that momma cherrys from ramsays nightmares but have seen very bad reviews for it.
Anyone from brighton know some decent reasonable places please ?

Depending on why/who you are going with, you can't beat some fish and chips by the sea, if it's not too cold that is.

Pinocchio's in Brighton is quite nice and affordable. £7 two courses with pizza/pasta and then there are more expensive options with steaks going upto around £15.

By the new Library there's a Carluccios which does very nice food, Zillis I haven't been to but 2 of the chefs that I used to work with apprently work there now and they're bloody good! And Pizza express, which is made of win. Near momma cherrys is a place called the Blue Man or something like that which looks good but I haven't eaten there.
I would avoid Donatello's, it's pretty poor quality italian food.

Have been to Strada a couple times and it hasn't disappointed if you are looking for an Italian offers a bit more than the usual pizza/pasta fare. Went to Moma Cherrys and agree with the reviews; it wasn't the best seemed to be living off the show. Casa Don Carlos was good for Tapas.

Momma Cherri's went under about a month ago guys - we had a booking there on the day after it was supposed to re-open and they cancelled it that morning. Was very sad as the woman was so apologetic she offered to cook all 20 of us the meal at her home!

You've got Jamie Oliver's newish restaurant which is right under my office next to the Cricketers/Black Lion pub. Food is great if a little on the pricey side, but pretty reasonable for a restaurant that a chef has "put his name to".

Zizzi is across the road which is ok although lunch there with the gf cost me more than dinner at Jamie's the following night!

I've always liked Bella Italia which is just around the corner, and then you got the whole "Donatello owned" restaurants around the Brighton Place/Market Street areas.

May be different if you don't go as a group, but La Tasca on north street was our fallback after Momma Cherri's cancelled, but the food was really awful - cold and just tasted like crap supermarket rubbish. And at 20 quid a head - total rip off.

Isn't Food for Friends veggie only Goldilocks? That would instantly count me out.

I've been to a few other places but can't remember their names - i'll have a walk round at lunch and see what they are called.

In essence, its mainly Italian round here.

If you are out with the gf or on a date, I'd probably choose Jamie's hands down for the desired effect.

She is opening a new one quite soon though iirc, the speakeasy?

So the website says. Fri, Sat and Sun only - No opening date specified that I can see. It's nearer London Road Brighton than the Seafront which the OP specified.

I find it odd that you've recommended 3 chain restaurants. Why would somebody go all the way to Brighton and try a restaurant that they could anywhere else in the country? The same goes for the La Tasca and Bella Italia recommendations

Surely the point of the OP was to find some local independent restaurants? Those chains are alright, but the i'm sure menu is pretty much the same across the country.

I'm not having a go, I just find it quite bizarre to recommend such well-known chains.

The OP asked for somewhere nice to eat. He did not ask where he could obtain bespoke-custom-spec-gigabyte-ultra-edition eatery™.

If he wants to eat somewhere unique then I imagine he'd have mentioned it :)

I've only ever heard bad things about La Tasca, I forgot about Jamies Restaurant (I must go there when I am back for christmas), my friend worked a shift there and tried some of the food, he recommended it.

He asked for some places nice to eat in Brighton, which they are :) I haven't been to La Fourchette (sp?) but I have heard good things about it which is an independtly owned place afaik.

Momma Cherri's Soul Food Shack

It's closed down now, she was on the news a while back ranting about how she went out of business because Gordon Ramsay only stepped in to save her business and then left. Like she expected him to help her out full-time after the cameras had gone.

Opens on the 23rd:

It's still well out of the way with regards to Brighton town. Not too bad if you are coming in by train however. But OP said by the sea so I guess that rules it out.
