30,000 servers, 25tb of log data per day - all so your mum can poke you

I had a facebook account for about 9 months, and I shut it down. It was all too easy to post up stuff that others could see, that you'd forget could see and well.....

Best to just keep your life off facebook to be honest. If I need to speak to someone I use that thing they call a 'telephone'... lol

Is it? I don't use FB or anything similar. I do not see the point in it at all, and I am sure I am not alone in that.

Its good for creating events that no one wants to go to :(. That aside, I get invited to events from time to time as well. The way I see it, is that it is simpler then sending 30 texts, which cost more and harder/more expensive to send updates.

All you need to do is block friends who insist on posting every 5 seconds what they did and its a nice place to keep in touch with friends who live too far away to just pop around.

What's wrong with e-mail? Or the telephone?

I don't email every one of my friends constantly to find out what's going on in their lives.

If i see, on my Facebook, someone posting "just bought a new car!" or "got a few days off from work" i'll call them or email them and chat.

What's wrong with that?

People change addresses and phone numbers, would be the obvious thing.

That would be the only reason I'd think Facebook had some use. Useful for keeping tabs on those that change their numbers. but then if they truely want to keep in touch, they'd send you their new number when they change their details etc...

whenever I get a new mobile, those I want to stay in touch with, I send a polite text with my new number.... Its easy.

Making individual calls takes time, plus this way people can mull over i they are coming or not without you hurrying them, or then waiting on them to get back to you. With a simple facebook invite you can change if you are coming or not far easier. Not to mention you will be less liekly to forget someone for example.

Email, email is ok, but it is hard to follow the thread if some people start multiple conversations or the tards who seem to love pressing reply to all button. It is simply easier to use facebook for such things.

Although I'm inclined to believe that most of the traffic is due to Bejeweled Blitz ........... which is currently 425,900 if anyone has any better? :D

:p

I can see facebook staying for a while, it gives it's users the illusion that other people care about what they are doing...

Spot on.

yes if you are under 21 it is.

Most 30 somethings don't care and are too busy working. You'll find out when you go to work for a living that facebook doesn't matter either. Also in scotland they use BEBO lol

In many counties facebook is also illegal in many businesses, government institution, universities, schools etc.

Its been about a year since I logged onto facebook.

They're still living on ego fumes. If fb went down for good, people would adapt in a week at most. Something else would come along and fill the void. I find their valuation laughable as their turnover is nowhere near that, and for that reason, I'm out.

Just need to wrap that in Duncan Bannatyne tags :D

I found myself reading 'and for that reason, I'm out.' in a scottish accent :D

Everybody says this when a new technology emerges? Then they die, and the opposition disappears, and it becomes as much a part of daily life as cars, railways, phones, computers, etc.

It's pretty laughable that you suggest email as an alternative, when it's barely fifteen years since people were lamenting email's having obsolesced the physical letter.
