He says that Nvidia are not cheaper than ATI, and that Nvidia are better value for money.

He says that his 260 gets the same performance as my 4870x2.

He says that Nvidia are the nicer company and they give better customer support.

Tell him he's wrong please.

So either ALL nVidia cards outpower the 5870 (which they don't) and happen to get more FPS per Buck than the 4850 (which none of them do) - or your friend is an idiot.

Well just have a look at the prices here on Overclockers

HD4870/GTX260
HD4890/GTX275
HD4850X2/GTX285

The Radeon card is consistently cheaper then the Geforce equivalent, and just ignoring this fact is plain stupid. Value for money however isn't as black and white as Geforce cards do support PhysX and CUDA applications however Radeons do have support for ATI Stream but no hardware physics even still though PhysX is overated and when it goes away I won't miss it so I would also give value for money to ATI on this point (I prefer ATI image quality as well and yes there is a difference in image quality between Geforce and Radeon).

In the few games that don't support Crossfire there is a case to say to the GTX260 is faster in some titles but they are few and far between. In common titles like Far Cry 2, Crysis, X3, GTA 4, Fallout 3, Company of Heroes etc the HD4870X2 smashes the GTX260 to smithereens.

Put it another way if everyone on this forum could have either the GTX260 of HD4870X2 for free 98% of folk would go with the HD4870X2.

I don't know about Nvidia being a nicer company then ATI, Nvidia has some dodgy business tactics as of late such as makeing sure AA doesn't work on Radeon video cards, disabling PhysX on it's own hardware if it isn't the primary video card (some folk like to use a Radeon for the graphics and their old Geforce for PhysX).

However if you friend is referring to Nvidia and ATI board partners (EVGA, XFX, VTX, Gigabyte, MSI, BFG etc) then I say he is right, Nvidia partners such as EVGA and BGF are much better at customer service then ATI partners like Sapphire (in my experience), it also helps that you can get 10 year warranties with some Geforce cards as opposed to 1 or 2 years with ATI/AMD.

On the whole I have concluded your friend is a fanboy or Nvidiot if you prefer

I had a 4870X2 before and now have a GTX 280, the X2 was faster but also louder and hotter than the sun.

hi 2 gtx280 running in SLI a lot better :-)

I allways nock the gpu fans upto 80 % when running need for speed :-)

not so much on cod.
