30,000 servers, 25tb of log data per day - all so your mum can poke you

:p

I can see facebook staying for a while, it gives it's users the illusion that other people care about what they are doing...

 how!? My result:

Talking about whether they'll reveal the server specs - At work we have crazy numbers of proximity servers near exchanges. We take some extreme measures to closely guard their specs and identity from competitor's prying eyes who share the same data centre.

Me being me, I want to know what one server consists of hardware wise. Is there any info on that? I looked but can't find. :( I suck at searching... I'm lazy too. :p

Evidently it's estimated that google have 700,000+ servers. That's like twice the population of my city, lol.

Definition of a server is a fluid one: Google basically use their own proprietary box which looks like a backyard bodge up:

Imagine if that datacentre burned down. There would be a fair few lost images!

Latest estimates are about 8 data centres globally for Facebook with another big one coming on line in 2011.

Advertisments.... Its linked to your profiles... You post about a PS3 game, and it has adverts about PS3, if you're single, and linked as single, dating sites come up on your page...

But everyones brains have evolved to blank out every advert on a page :o

Nice link, thanks.

Thank you for the link. :)

No worries - it's a really clever design to be honest. Combine it with the shipping container idea lower down and they can pretty much deploy a new DC as fast as they get the power and fibre in place. Rumour has it they are working on a mini-DC that fits into a standard flight cargo container or two :p

What you never see (and what they never release details of) is the storage side of things. Goggle have written their own file system though!

yes if you are under 21 it is.

Most 30 somethings don't care and are too busy working. You'll find out when you go to work for a living that facebook doesn't matter either. Also in scotland they use BEBO lol
Funnily enough i do work for a living, but thanks for that.

Funnily enough i know plenty of people over 30 that are on FB. Including people at my last workplace, the one before that, my current one, plenty of my relatives, friends of friends etc.. Shock horror, they all have jobs too. Mad eh.

I haven't given them a single thing. In fact, I don't have Facebook installed at all!

You don't install it.

To be honest, privacy is a real concern. I don't mind posting generic crap, but nothing REALLY personal ever gets on, and the only people I "friend" are people I actually know.
