My visit to the British Airways 737 simulator

I got very lucky when I did the 744. It was a friend who had it bought for him for his birthday and he opted to take me along. We split the time about 60/40 and it cost me just a pint or two.

I did some of the installation work on the Eurofighter simulators at RAF Coningsby, only got to have a sit in it though

Please tell me you crashed it for a laugh when your time was up.

You cant crash them as it simulates that pretty good. When we were on the 772 sims, the guy with me in the right hand seat was doing a landing at Zurich but since he had no flight experience he cocked it up massively. HE had forgotten to do his seatbelt and teh sim operator was a bit slow hitting the abort button. The last thing I remember was my colleagues ass at my eye level!

Jonny,

first of all - you complete git - I'm jealous beyond comprehension.

But very well done on a good show, and an excellent review. This is something I've been casually looking into for a while, and when I read how much it cost you I was straight onto the website, only to find the price was a lot more, and the 744 (which I would consider too) is very very expensive - but justifiably so I think given the tech involved.

The only thing that would worry me (737 wise - I think the 747 would make a real fool out of me but it would still be fun) is how the real controls felt to the hand and sensory feedback you get from the full motion. I've heard the yoke and pedals feel very solid and need a hefty hand but at the same time are surprisingly sensitive and only require tiny inputs especially on approach - sound about right?

Hi Andy! Thanks for that - you never got into BAV yet did you?

Definitely would recommend the trip - amazing fun. I just used a joystick with flight sim and was worried as well about how it handles but you soon get used the it! I noticed the 737 flight director seemed to be a big laggy compared to the flight sim and therefore I ended up over-correcting any movements way too much but after the first circuit it was grand and I quickly got onto it. Was good fun with all the winds thrown in and you really had to steer a good few degrees off the runway course to keep it in line! So much stuff to watch though and you feel you really are in the real thing and almost are worried about the virtual passengers in the back!

The 747 is a mad price now but I definitely would fancy it next time as I am now getting onto the PMDG one pretty well in the sim. Did my first long haul the other day - Boston into Heathrow - took about 7 hours!
