New TV - Dunno what to get

At the moment I have a 32" Philips 1080i lcd tv from a few years ago. I wanna get a proper full HD tv at some in the 40"+ size. It's only going to be for HD stuff (or dvds I guess as we expand the bluray collection). Blurays, ps3, xbox360. There are no SD tv channels to worry about. I have a feeling some form of Plasma is what people are going to recommend, however I have a problem there. The people I live with constantly leave stuff running / dont turn of the tv etc. So I can get up in the morning to find the TV on and the same screen from some game on there overnight.

My budget is going to be anwhere up to 2k euro, but I don't know how much I will be able to stretch.. its gonna depend on xmas bonus ;) So anything from sorta 750+ price range can be considered.

I have been looking at some other philips tv's, from the 8404, 9664 up to the new led backlight ones (9704 i think - havent seen this as its only being released around now I understand). I used to live near a philips store which is where I was checking them out.

Anyone got any advice / pointers for me in what I should be looking at/for?

Thanks,

GiR

First thing is, don't let people use your TV if they abuse it. I'd take the remote with me.

Price wise, I've just bought a 50" 100Hz 1080P plasma for £520, so no need to spend 2000 euro's. You should be able to get a good TV from £5-800.

Pioneer plasma's are all the rage and rightly so but if people leave TVs on and you are worried about screen burn then I don't see the problem with getting an LCD.

I got an LCD after a lot of research and I am very happy with it.

If you want a plasma then get a Pioneer TV if the budget fits, if its LCD you are happy with (worth considering) then Sony are typically one of the better ones.

LCD TVs are a lot better than they use to be 2/3 years ago. Especially with LED technology growing, I would expect a new range of Sony LED LCD TVs sometime over the next few months.

I see that a lot of people online are raving about the LG 42LH5000 and are pleased that they have bought it.

Well of course they are going to rave about, they arn't going to **** off the set they bought :p

Have a look at the sony or samsung LCDs if the set really is left on a lot / taking a beating.

Just recently bought a 40" set myself. Did a fair bit of reading up..mainly from hdtvtest and the avs forums and narrowed it down to the Samsung B650 or the Sony KDL-40W5500. Coincidently there was an offer on the Sony for £600 so thats what I have ended up with :)

I was tempted to spend a bit more on the new Samsung 7020 model especially with the eco cash back being offered atm but couldnt justify the price increase and dont really like buying 1st gen of something! If you're looking to spend about 600-700 then the above 2 models are well worth looking into.

Same here.
(And I originally went out to buy a plasma as most of the post's on here seem to slant towards these.)

The only niggle I do have, is that we bought a LG 5:1 cinema, which links to the TV using Simplink, so you only have to use the Sky remote for volume thru the HT, but it doesn't remember the link, you have to set it up each time you turn the TV on :(

LG 42LH5000 says digital tv tuner does that mean Freeview ?

Yes.

From a review:

The Freeview tuner adds just a touch of noise to a delivery that’s otherwise very similar to that of DVD, while the sound from the ‘Invisible Speakers’ is a bit bright, but otherwise fairly open and clear.

LG Also do a similar TV (not as good quality) with Freesat HD built in, if that's your thing.
