I'd like to send someone a bottle of whisky as a "thank you" for something. I'm looking to spend up to £30. Can anyone recommend a decent brand in that price bracket and ideally somewhere online that I can order from?

Thanks all.

PS Don't ask me any questions about what kind of whisky or anything, I don't even like the stuff myself!

Rubbish the both of you. Someone who truly appreciates Whisky would prefer something like the suggestions in posts 2 and 3 rather than some commercialised rubbish or some blended rubbish.

to the Op, consider a bottle of this, it's my personal favourite whiskey in this pricerange:

Oh do shut up, taste is a subjective thing.

I love drinking Whiskey when the fancy takes me and although Laphroaig is nice, Glenfiddich 12 year is far superior in my opinion.

If you want a good all-rounder OP, try Vat-69.

in my, not inconsiderable, experience with many many whiskies, I can tell you that in comparison to more bespoke whiskies, Glenfiddich 12y is harsh and unfinished, lacking in subtlety and grace, leaving an unpleasant lingering after-taste of it's discordant and unbalanced flavours.

my Rule of thumb is that if a whisky isn't sealed with a natural cork, it's not worth buying.

Whisky is quite a subjective thing, if you know what brand they like or even just the sort of style (peaty/smooth etc) then it would be easier. However since you don't know that I'd be tempted to play it safe and go for something like this Jura which is tasty but not overpowering and isn't likely to offend anyone.

Famous old brand, chosen by Sir Ernest Shackleton to accompany him on his Imperial Trans-Atlantic Expedition of 1914 'for medicinal and celebratory purposes'.

Love it :D

I think you can get a reasonably sized bottle of Chivas Regal (maybe 500-750ml, can't remember) from Sainsburys for about £30. I don't drink whiskey but I hear this is a good one.

EDIT: 700ml for about £25. Might be slightly cheaper elsewhere.

Do you know what kind of whisky they like in general? I only ask as what one whisky lover might like another may hate. Certain ones like Laphroaig, though very good, even for whisky drinkers can be very much an acquired taste. For an all round one to suit most tastes I would go far Glanfarclas, Macallan or Strathisla.

Using that link above but this bottle is absolutely stunning. Tis 29p above budget. :p

laphroaig!!

Good whisky, but that link is very expensive.

The laphroaig 10 can be found for around £25 in the major supermarkets. Sainsbury's do the laphroaig quarter cask for £26.50 which is better (IMO) and stronger at 48%. Asda have the best offer though, with a laphroaig 10 cask strength (55.7%) at £27.50. That's the best of the laphroaig range if you ask me (drinking some right now :p), even better than the more expensive laphroaig 15, but it's pretty powerful stuff.

[obvious laphroaig fan here - arbeg is great stuff too though]
