So, i've seen a lot of people with these and i am looking for some house headphones but i have a few questions about them....

1. How is the bass?
2. How much noise can be heard by others? <------ Would people on a plane look at you funny ;)
3. Do your ears get hot/sweaty?
4. Are they worth £70, do you have any regrets?
5. How comfortable are they?

Thanks for your input.

The Goldring DR150 are supposedly better and are the exact same price.

Haven't heard them but as they're open back you can bet they will be heard by others and they will not make your ears hot. For travelling you should look at closed back.

Pretty good, won't shake your head to pieces but not tinny either

2. How much noise can be heard by others? <------ Would people on a plane look at you funny ;)

Quite a lot, they're open headphones so unless you're listening very quietly the person sat next to you will be able to hear everything.

3. Do your ears get hot/sweaty?

Not at all. Enough to keep your ears warm in winter but not be noticeable in summer

4. Are they worth £70, do you have any regrets?

Paid about £55 for mine, worth every penny, not sure if more options become available at the £70 price range though.

5. How comfortable are they?

Very

Thanks for your input.

I've got a pair on the way, so I'll be able to directly compare them with my Senn HD580's and Superlux knock-off AKG K240s (which incidentally I think are pretty good).

You can definitely find them for less than £70.

Overpriced they should be around £40, if only grados had a better headband and earpads by default.
I'd get goldring dr150 over hd555's anyday because they can be had for £40 ish and are just as good if not better.

How do the DR150s feel on your head? what is build quality like? they don't look as well built as the HD555 - of course look and feel is not in the toplist on headphones but if you want something that lasts and can take a beating then the better built headphone is the one to choose no? especially considering they both sound very much alike out of the box but I'd take a leap and say the Sennheiser will sound better as time goes on.

I've had my HD555 since around 2006 and for the good part of 18 months ish they continued to improve in sound each month (I use them every night) and they look just as new as I bought them on day 1 bar a tiny hairline crack on one of the sides from one of the multiple times it has fallen on the laminate flooring.

The sound is meaty but not boomy, the treble and mid are separated and clearly audible. I listen to a mix genre (rap/rnb/hip hop to jpop and jazz/vocal) of music but especially enjoy stuff from the likes of Jack Johnson, Damien Rice and Nitin Sawhney and I can assure you they sound sublime through both the HD555 and speakers like the way every instrument and background sound is positioned as perfectly as you'd expect.

What amp and/or soundcard do you have? the source is equally (if not more) important to getting the kind of sound I describe above.

I'm going to get the HD600 in the near future as I think I've had the HD555 long enough to deserve a nice upgrade but the HD555 will always remain in my recommendation list in the under £80 headphone catagory having had Grados in that range before and disliked the fatiguing sound they offer.

FWIW I'm running a Xonar Essence STX and NAD C325BEE amp to drive my phones and speakers.

I paid £55 for my HD555 bought brand new from a popular hifi e-outlet

1. How is the bass?

Very good,.

My wife can hear them sitting in the next room. This arguably is their only downside, but the quality is better because they are open.

3. Do your ears get hot/sweaty?

No, not at all.

4. Are they worth £70, do you have any regrets?

No regrets, I think they're worth more.

5. How comfortable are they?

You can wear them all day.

On a side note, they are fairly tight for the first 100 hours or so. Then their quality really starts to show.

1. How is the bass?

Very good. I've not owned a great many pair of headphones but the bass is a whole lot better than the fatal1ty one I had before it.

2. How much noise can be heard by others? <------ Would people on a plane look at you funny ;)

I'm afraid so, they are open headphones.

3. Do your ears get hot/sweaty?

Never, even during the hot summer nights :)

4. Are they worth £70, do you have any regrets?

I managed to pick mine up for around 50 (or 55 can't remember) and I'm very happy with mine, had 'em for over a year now.

5. How comfortable are they?

Very comfy, trust me ;)

Thanks for your input.

I went for HD595's

the desk stand clip is awesome :) they look brand new, without this clip they'd be a lot worse for wear

paid £90 for them, delivered

cheapest I've seen them for today was £99.99
