Irish accents..

Am i right in assuming many places in America are highly influenced by the Irish accent? I met this American girl today at the pub whos lived here for about 8yrs and for about 5 minutes i could swear she was irish as her accent was a weird mix of American and British!

Lots of people with Irish ancestry in America (I for one, great grandfather was from Belfast). I have noticed similarities in the accents as well.

I can't really claim to be Irish though as I'm also Japanese, Sicilian, German, and Russian

An irish accent on a lady is awesome. Three and a half years later and i'm not fed up with it.

Although i'm still discovering what things like scallions and yokes are, and wondering exactly what i'm being accused of when she says i'm acting the maggot or being a messer.

Also works for Scottish as well with quite a few Americans or Canadians, not sure about Welsh but the North Americans I've met have probably got no reason to tell me if they are 1/24 Welsh.

I'm not, in fact for quite a few St Patrick's Days I'd go out but quite determinedly not drink any Guinness. The advertising campaigns just annoyed me for that particular event so as a point of principle I'd go out and drink something else, still had a good time though.

I don't have anything against Americans. I was making a point about how people like to consider themselves something that they are not.
