Yeah, I'm there for the new year too. I'll be in Bangkok again for the Songkran festival (13th-15th April). Can't wait. :D

Go to koh phangan for the new years full moon. I did ones in august and october and they were both fantastic. October was best

Also, something Seek didnt put (as its not about bangkok) is that in the israili section, just off kohsan road you can get tickets to koh phangan for 400 bht (around £6) This is overnight travel on a coach so you save a nights accom money. It stops about 3 or 4 times.

I got mine off a woman in a small stall, she was cheapest.

Cheers for the info. Spending a few days there on my way back from Aus in January. Stopping at the Siam@Siam hotel which looks rather nice, though not sure what part of Bangkok it's in (Rama 1 Road, Wang Mai, Patumwan).

I'm just trying to figure what the best itinerary is going to be for me, i.e. stuff to do!

I should be there from 26th March to 28th April, or there abouts. Need to get from Bangkok down to Singapore in that time aswell for my flight to Australia.

Going out solo atm, ex-gf is reason i'm bailing for a bit, cba with her at all, need some time to myself etc!!! My brother said he might try and get out for a couple of weeks because he loves the Songkran festival (as its on his birthday too). But I don't know if he is going to or not!

Don't think any of my friends can make it sadly :( (although one or two may be swayed!) Just taking 4 months or so out to see Thailand, Australia, NZ & Fiji and Western USA.

Wish I could go away now but I won't have the money until then :(

Wouldn't mind meeting up with anyone and anyone to be honest, so yeh seek, definately wouldn't mind having a beer with you etc!

Cool, I'll drop you a message (to your trust email?) as soon as I have my dates sorted for definate.

Songkran drove me mad, ok for a few hours but after that it all got on my nerves
Yeah I can imagine this to be the case, but I'd love to experience it anyway.

Or maybe you're just being a grumpy old git who doesnt want to join in with the fun. ;)

The fun of Songkran is when you're dressed for it, similarly armed and with like-minded people. The hell of it is when someone throws a bucket of water into your taxi when you're dressed for a meeting, when an ice-bucket is thrown over you when you're sat at a table eating.

A friend of mine had a bucket of water thrown over him and his girlfriend when they were dressed to the nines for an anniversary meal so he kicked the (farang) guy in the fork. Sense of humour failure of justified revenge on an a-hole?

EDIT: Ever been to a real Songkran festival? When children gather to sprinkle water on the hands of the elders of the village? It's rather beautiful and dignified.

By the way, if you want the ultimate weapon in a Songkran water fight you need an elephant!

we were on the way to a smart restaurant when some Aussie yob threw a bucker of water over us both

I politely explained to him that I didn't think what he had done was a clever idea :p

lol, exact same thing happened to me, its great fun up until you want to carry on with normal life and some people just dont know when to curb it, especially holiday makers and (some) expats.

No need to be like that, I was merely (genuinly) intererested in why you choose to live there. The nightlife is Bangkok's biggest appeal to myself and many others, so I was interested to learn why someone who wasn't into that side of things made a conscious choice to live there.

I seem to have hit a nerve by asking about this though.

No, you're just being ridiculous by saying things like "Seriously, why the hell are you there, when you clearly hate it?" All I have said is that the things you enjoy doing are not my priority. If you're genuinely interested, act reasonably.

Panthro, thanks for the tip about the restaurant, I'll head over to there at the weekend.

Yep its really nice, I was feeling adventurous and tried the deep fried frog, was surprisingly delicious :)

I had frog in malaysia, it tastes just like chicken! I'll definitely take the gf there. Do you remember if they serve dog? It seems pretty difficult to get in Bangkok, I'm having to ask one of my friends to bring some some back from Chiang Rai. It's great!

No dog, dont think Im that adventurous! I did see ant eggs on the menu, along with intestines and other things.

This isn't the right thread but Panthro, can you still access the OCUK forums? Thailand seems to be blocking it for me. Has someone been insulting the king somewhere?

I was thinking the same thing but just managed to get back on, think it was a problem at their end, back on line now.
Will be going to Bangkok in a couple of weekends after spending 1 week on Koh Tao diving :D Think I deserve it after working 14 days straight 10 hours a day in the heat :(

Weird because it's been fine if I access through a VPN but not the normal way. Oh well. I'll swap with you, everyone thinks I've just arrived because I'm inside all day so have beautiful white skin. I want pigment damnit!
