So guys what is your opinion on this? I feel like wearing more than just suit trousers and shirt at work, most people wear a jacket / have a jacket with them so I was thinking that the logical step is to add a waistcoat without a tie (similar to Patrick Jane from the Mentalist).

How do people think this will work with a normal (not casual) suit?

Does it NEED a tie?

Work dress is "business-casual" so don't really want to be super smart, however it can't do any harm :D

Thanks

Daven

yeah works well.. rolled up sleeves are very win.

doesnt NEED a tie, but looks good with a tie as well, so you can just see how you feel on the day! :)

i have 3 suits that i wear like this for work :)

At some point I mentioned I liked this sort of look to the bloke and bam, guess how he dressed for a posh date (yes, that suit/waistcoat's too big for him which is why you can see the trousers sitting very low, he used to be somewhat girthier):

jeebus, that man is ominously tall!

How about with non-rolled up sleeves? Long sleeves are preferred for work (and I prefer french cuffs) I am worried it will look unfinished without a tie, but I don't want to wear a tie!

I plan on going to some shops and taking some time in their dressing rooms, but am wondering how everyone else sees it!

Thanks for the positive replies so far :)

I rememer one of the sales guys at my last place came in once sporting a waistcoat, the rest of the day was dedicated to snooker related jokes. Safe to say it was never seen again.

Save yourself a few quid and a lot of abuse

Mate at work wore a waistcoat in once - I think he had approximately 14 sets of keys thrown at him at various points throughout the day.

I wouldnt expect a salesman to wear a suit, but at the engineering company I worked with, a few waistcoats were on show.

Waistcoat + skinny tie?
Waistcoat + a cheeky bow-tie?
Get a jacket at the same time and if you've had enough of the 'coat you can throw a jacket on top and look ultra-overkill-cool.

It will look unfinished without a tie. A waistcoat focuses the eye on the upper portion of the chest leading to the neck. An open shirt (i.e. no tie) will be likely to splay over the waistcoat top, particularly if it's a cutaway collar, and this looks messy.

Double cuffed shirts should always be worn. This will not make up for the fact that you're wearing the suit incorrectly, however.

If you're going bespoke - which you should - ask your tailor the same questions. I'd be surprised if he suggests differently.

I wear a waistcoat to work sometimes. I get the snooker jokes but I don't care. I also have a pocket watch on a chain that I wear with it so I look uber badass.

I bought a trilby on ebay lately too. Need to see where that's got to actually.

Thanks. Vonhelmet I agree with the "uber badass" look :D

Double cuffed shirts look really good so I think I will go with these.

I guess a skinny tie will work :) and too formal is better than too casual.

Thanks for all the replies, am looking forward to trying out the new look!

A skinny tie is not appropriate if you're going for a more formal, classical look. It will clash with the rest of your appearance. It will also look appalling with a shirt that has any kind of cutaway collar; most tailored shirts with double cuffs will have at least a slight angled cutaway. Speak to your tailor and you can't go wrong :)

As an aside, what kind of shoes are you looking at?
