ok I have a 27" LCD samsung TV that is HD ready
Will do 720P and 1080i
It has component on the back of it and DVI.
No HDMI port.

Apparently the new Sky HD boxes have got rid of the component on the back of it so I am wondering what my options will be.

HDMI-Component converter..Is there another output for audio as I can link that to my hifi or tv.
??

Pretty sure the boxes have an optical output for sound. Think a converter is the only way to go for the video im afraid.

I have a Thomson box that has Component outs - they should be still able to supply them

Otherwise, well-known auction sites would be able to supply them for about £80.

Just watch out for the dodgy PSU issue - that will cost about £30 to get resolved.

Other option is the HDFury - version one which is DVI based (hence no sound) or version 2 which is HDMI based (carries sound)

Or the cheapest of the 3 - HDMI to DVI cable - which everyone else has told you :)

He won't be getting a Thomson box now, they are very old hat.

HDMI to DVI cable for you my son, or just buy a nice new tv :D

HDMI to DVI lead, cheap as you like. Take the audio from either the RCA jacks or the optical depending on your setup.

I will be getting a new TV soon so I want the HDMI option.

Thomson boxes have HDMI in addition to componant, and once their dodgy PSU's have been upgraded they are very stable, very reliable boxes. a lot better than Amtrash boxes, and pretty much on a par with the Pace box.

The replacement PSU's are £32 pounds from satcure if you feel up to replacing them yourself, somewhat more if you get someone else to do the repair/upgrade for you.

But they're slow and noisy. A friend of mine has the Pace box - it's lightning fast and whisper quiet in comparison to mine.

I don't see what the issue is - HDMI = DVI. Just get an HDMI to DVI cable and get a new box.

The hard drive is a bit clicky especially with the new EPG, but my Thomson has a whisper quiet fan, I might change the hard drive eventually, as for slow, yes it was slow before I had a satcure PSU upgrade, but now its fine.

Are you telling me that a new psu increased the processing capacity of your box? :D

No, im saying that a satallite reciever is a computer, and a computer with a faulty powersupply makes mistakes, mistakes that get detected can be corrected, but corrections take addition time.

Before the repair I got lipsync problems all the time, now its good, before 12x forward play was jerky and 30x forward play would just forwards and backwards like crazy (IE you skipped some adds at 30x play, and as soon as you went back to standard play, boom your back in the middle of the adverts again), now 12x is smooth and 30x is slightly jerky but perfecty useable. The EPG is definatly more responsive to the remote now. Its worth remembering that the new EPG stores a ton of data on the hard disk, and with a bad PSU this data can get corrupted, and the corrupted data cripples the performance of the EPG.

Before the repair dual recording was not an option (well it worked, but as soon as either of the two programs ended, the box would reboot and both recordings would be "failed technical fault"), now I can dual record a pair of HD channels, and watch a HD recording at the same time.

I've not used a Pace myself, but the performance of the repaired Thomson box is perfectly acceptable. For anyone wanting the flexibility of both a good quality componant output, and a 1080i HDMI output, a repaired Thomson is not a bad box, sure there may be better boxes, but it really isnt a horrible piece of equipment.

Ah, ok, you were having actual issues.

I can tell you as an owner of both a Thompson with no issues, and a Pace, the pace is miles faster and is what people are referring to. :) If you have not used a Pace box, you can liken the performance to that of the Thompson before the EPG upgrade.

The pace is a good box, dont get me wrong, but a good Thomson is still a very flexible option if anyone wants componant and HDMI outputs on a single box :), assuming the Thomson's got a satcure PSU.

Pace have always made nice boxes, I still have a Sky+ Pace v2 box, but its just a "spare" incase the HD box fails :P.
