Even on consoles, dedicated servers are better.
-Better uptime
-Lower latencies
-Better performance (32 player games use megabits of bandwidth that some people don't have)
-Customization
-Communities
Ideally they'd allow dedi servers for both PC and console. Microsoft is encouraging game makers to allow dedicated servers for consoles and PCs through Games for Windows. Valve likes matchmaking (L4D) but uses a hybrid with dedi servers.
I agree with what you are saying Viper. I also hear TriedandTested's point as well, matchmaking does make things a fair bit easier, but why not have both? And/or have the matchmaking then take you to a dedicated server, much like Valve's Left 4 Dead system. When it works, Valve's system works brillliantly for Left 4 Dead, when it doesn't it fails miserably. Still, the idea is good and is more what IW should have done to keep gameplay experience for all better.
