Will You Buy Windows 7???

My copy is finally on route to Slovakia, which will probably take around a week and few days :(. But hey, i got it for less than price of OEM version here in Slovakia, plus it is english (i hate localised versions) :).

Is that still on the pre-order deal? I thought those were over now and the price had gone up to the full £150?

thanks

I just checked OcUK and it is still 66.99 at the moment. Having cancelled a pre order elsewhere (was hoping it would be less than £70 in a few months - but I didn't know the £70 ish mark was still an offer) I have now ordered from here before OcUK stick the price back up.

I am quite relieved to be honest, I thought I was going to have to pay a premium later on, I originally missed the £45 pre order price by 1 day months back.

I think some of u are getting confused between 2 versions,

the pre order price for win 7 PRO was £65 but went up to £150 and its still £150
Win 7 HOME standard is £65 at the moment (not sure if this has changed at all)

Finding Windows 7 slow on my HP 6715b laptop, I installed the 64bit version, but only have 2GB RAM installed. Think that may be the issue, was going to install my copy that has arrived, but going to iron these things out with the Enterprise Trial copy first.

Either I try 32bit or I spend the money on 4GB RAM. Equally I think a SSD drive would help, but that's silly money for a two year old laptop :(

I installed Pro on my sister's Asus laptop with 2GB ram and it's not slow at all?

Also, There is no Windows 7 Home "Standard" plus Pro pre-order price was £89 not 65.

I wonder if it's a slow RPM disk or and issue with the HP laptop :(

I've installed Win 7 on a partition so I can test it out and see how it all works before sticking it on a new PC in 4 weeks time or so. I'm dual booting with Win XP and use Vista at work.

The home Pc I have is a 1GB, AMD 3500 so just one core and not much RAM, and Win 7 seems to be pretty quick so far for what I've used it for. No problems. It feels smoother than the XP I have.

The new taskbar willl take some getting use to, but I love how it looks.

Everything seems so smooth and snappy. The PC at work has more RAM and is a Intel multicore that runs Vista - and it's slow and a bit of a dog.

So it's well worth the £45 and quite happy with the O/S

I have a couple of Windows 7 Home Premiums on order for laptop + PC at £45 retail copies.

Should I cancel(if still possible, I guess I could flog them) those and get £30 student professional copies? I don't know whether you can do clean installs, which is the problem.

Yes you will be able to do a clean install, a lot of people seem to think that 'Upgrade' editions mean you can’t do a clean install, well to date, with MS upgrade edition OS's you have always been able to, however, you do need a valid full OS install disk from the list that is appropriate for upgrade. So, if you have a retail XP Home (full version) disk, you can upgrade to W7 Home Edition, and the same is true for Pro.

All you do (or have done in the past) is start the installation by booting from the cd/dvd as you would normally, and eventually it'll ask you for the older OS disk with a full version on it, just put that in the disk drive, it'll either accept or decline it and then put the disk you are actually installing from back in and it'll let you do a clean install …unless it declined it, but I’ve only seen that happen when trying to upgrade from an incorrect version of Windows.

Simple as that.

Pre ordered my copy just now, should arrive Monday! Looking forward to it now. Im going to run it on a Stripped array, anybody have experience of how stable Windows 7 is with P45 raid drivers?

Not sure what it is to be honest. I'm about to start working at a university and have been told I can walk in to the uni shop and buy Windows Vista for £10 - I assume they'll be switching over to Windows 7 in the next couple of days and wondered if anyone knew in case all unis were doing this.

It'll depend on the site license your uni has and whether you'll need to sign a personal agreement about wiping your machine if you ever leave/academic use only etc, which usually takes a few days to process.

I don't think mine has even started to think about offering it yet although has announced that it will support Win7 64-bit. Then there is the whole volume licensing issue for dialling home to a work server to think about if that's the version they sell. More than likely it'll be Pro unis will sell due to domain joining requirements many have (we'll be charged £20 per CD).

I can only go with the beta but it was fine - using a Asus P45 Pro board.

M.

P.S. Remember to put the UNPACKED drivers on a USB / Floppy disk as you'll need them when installing (well some models you do - better to be safe than sorry!)
