Ok so here is my situation.

I took a broken xbox 360 elite off a friend (with no HDD) because it had the no picture but sound problem. I wanted to look into how easy an xbox was to repair (after reading many threads and things online) and see if i could get it up and running again so i could give it to my girlfriend (as she ((and her mum)) loves playing lips)

I bought an x-clamp replacement kit off of bay and got to work. Within 30 mins or so the xbox was rebuilt and working with no issues at all.

I was over the moon. tested the machine for hours on end (playing DVD's and a little SF4) as i didnt want it to fail again before giving it to the GF.

All seemed well and i didnt have 1 issue with the machine what so ever. So i popped the machine over the GF's house fitted a spare 20GB hard drive and off they went playing lips for about 3 weeks with no problems.

However, last weekend the machine decided to reproduce the problem of no picture but sound.

Now I;m going to have another look at the machine to see if i can get it up and running again but my questions i would like some advise on are as follows:

1. Would them sitting the machine upright cause much of a problem if the x-clamp fix screws where not tight enough? As I have a feeling the heat sinks might have either come loose and caused GPU overheating again?

2. Do you think a simple re bake/screw tighten will sort the problem out?

3. Do you recon the chip is just to far gone and is going to keep causing problems? Because if thats the case I will bin it and just buy one from new.

(Oh and btw the GF knew it was one i fixed, I didnt try and pull a fast one and pretend i bought her an xbox from new to score brownie points :p)

well as far as im aware (information from a friend) it was not RROD i was a sound but no picture which Xbox claimed was not warranty and that he would have to pay for a fix.

Yeah that is a possibility, but would still like to see (more for personal triumph then anything else) if i can squeeze some more life out of the dog yet.

I x-clamped my launch day 360 about 1 year ago and it's not skipped a beat since. It's vital that you tighten the bolts the right amount from my experience however.

Oven bake and x-clamp again. You might get 12-months or more out of it, you might get a week.

I've done literally 100's of them, all using the same screws and washers etc. and all screws done up to the same tightness. Lots have lasted well over a year, some have lasted a week.

How long it lasts is purely down to luck (assuming it's done right).

Yeah ive got some time set aside for tomorrow now so im going to retry the fix again. I just hope it holds out .....

Why would i want to play with her lips .... Now her mum on the other hand .... ROFL

Ive fixed mine about 5times now and tonight it started locking up with a red chequerpattern on the screen. im gonna try to bake and xclamp it again:(

Helped A Friend do his a year back now, been working fine since.

Think mine might be on the way out, got the evil chequer board pattern last night playing cod4

Didnt bake mine again as ive done it twice. so i 12v'd the rear fans and added a fan to the top. It sounds like a hoover now but its cool:)

Lol nice. Im currently waiting for mine to bake and cool down before i try it again, The nuts i used where a little loose so im guessing this was the problem. Hope i can get it working again. I dont want to have to buy a new one for her. Shes a nice GF n' all but shes not worth that much :D
