Car for 4-5k

Hi all,

I'm in an unfortunate position where I could be made redundant in the next few days and to help make ends meet until I find another job, I will need to sell my 2006 GTI

Very sad as its a lovely car, but whatever, potentially need the cash unfortunately.

Anyways, to the point of the thread, I will need to buy another car. If you had 4-5k to spend, what would you spend it on?

Anybody any thoughts? Pay more for a German brand or go cheaper with a Ford or similar?

I thought the Mk4 Golf GTi was a bit pants?

Mk4 GTi is possibly the most pointless golf ever made... avoid!

4-5k? U want a hatch? Saloon? Fast? Cheap to run? I'm guessing you're after a small cheap to run hatch with a bit of poke but nothing costly...? Avoid the performance versions of the hatchbacks, maybe a Focus edge or something...?

Sorry, I was a bit vague in my requirements. Just looking for something cheap, not worried about performance. Only me and gf no kids so could go for something small like a fiesta or polo.

I know little about cars, would you recommend a franchise dealer, private or local garage?

The mp3 is a nice spec, special edition. Only downside is it's a 1.8 which is relatively pointless but not a bad engine per-se

I didn't realise they put the 2.0 NA into the MK4 and badged that as a GTi too...?

Yep, even though it was less powerful than the 1.8 NA.

Surely a 206 GTI cant be worth more than 5k? What are you actually gaining by selling it?

I'm in a similar position, although i won't be buying until early next year.

My shortlist are..

- Octavia VRs
- Mondeo ST220
- Jag X-Type (2.5 or 3.0 Sport)

Basic requirements for me are 2003/4/5 with <60k on the clock and pristine* bodywork

*or as close to pristine as possible.

the gti is no longer the flagship since the mk3 though, it's been the vr6 and now r32
