Going to Birmingham for 5 days soon and looking for some shouts on good currys houses.

We're staying at Brindley Place so close to Broad St would be useful but I lived down there for a while so travelling further is not a problem.

Focus is on quality of food rather than surroundings, price etc

All suggestions welcomed. Ta.

Only one I can think of on Broad St is Shimla Pinks, though I've never been.

Lasan in St Pauls Square is quite good, about 10 minutes walk from Brindley place. Or venture out to Sparkhill for a more 'authentic' feel.

only been to shimla pinks once and thought it was a bit pretentious tbh though food was ok but nothing special.
i would travel to lye (about 20 minutes away) and go to one of the balti houses in the high street.

I wouldn't really class Shimla Pinks or Lasans as good food. They're ok, but they aren't anything special. Both places I've been to at least 3 times and each time they've failed to impress.

Only problem you'll find is the places that do serve good food, are usually away from Broad Street and will look like a dive in comparison to the nice decor found in the top end budget eateries.

If that doesn't put you off too much, you could try Channi's on Stratford Road, it's not been decorated in a while so it is pretty old school in there, but the food is amazing and very well priced.
The other place I rate quite highly which is again out of the way, is Little Havana, which can be found on Warwick Road in Acocks Green. Great place, it's nicely decorated inside, and the food is great.
The last place I'd say, which is closer to the airport, and is on Coventry Road, is a placed called B26 - again, brilliant food, and is my usual place to grab a curry from.

If you're trying to stay in town though, I'd avoid Shimla Pinks or Milan's, the food at both is quite bland and you will come out feeling underwhelmed and slighly ripped off at the price/quality you get. There is a very nice place called Etihaas which is a stones throw away from Broad Street and do serve good food and is very nice on the inside.

Cheers, where's Sparkhill?

Nice one. I've eaten there before and forgot about it.

As per OP, not fussed about surroundings, the food it important! There's also a place, Blue Mango (thanks Mikoyan!) I think off Broad Street. Just as you say, nice modern restaurant, good curry all in all but just very bland.

So, Channi's currently top of list!

In that case, definately Channi's.

Do you actually like the food there? I've found it to be a little on the bland side of things. If you're around that area, definately go further down Coventry Road (towards the airport) and check out B26, the food is awesome!

Sparkhill/Sparkbrook is about 2 miles from the centre of Birmingham, its the asian area littered with curry/balti houses a bit like curry mile in Manchester.

If you head to Ladypool Rd/Stratford Rd in Sparkbrook you won't go far wrong.

Imran's on Ladypool Road - you must try the tandoori lamb chops as a starter they are awesome!

Dont forget to pop into the off license to get your beer beforehand as most places are not licensed.
