For that budget, I'd be looking at Clio 172s, maybe even a 182.

Hopefully being out of work and such will only be a short term issue so I'd be looking to spend maybe £2k-£3k on a nice tidy well looked after 5-8 year old car (Fiesta if you want a hatch, Focus for something bigger or a Mondeo for a saloon). Come to sell it in 6 months time and shouldn't have lost too much value and shouldn't have cost you much to run.

A £5k Fiesta could still lose quite a bit of money in 6-12 months and in the short term shouldn't be any less reliable or horrible to drive than an older cheaper car.
