If Royal Mail went on strike permenantly

No but I work within the group I cannot say where though :) I’m only giving ‘my opinion’ as to what’s happening. They do not provide a terrible service how can you come to this conclusion?

If you aren't on the ground so to speak, then how do you know? I am sure from your position the reality is very different to that which the actual customer experiances.

You have no idea have you? I really cannot be bothered to argue/debate anymore its getting rather silly, you simply cannot win with people like you, you only see one side and form a view and there is no hope in hell in changing that.

I have posed a perfectly logical question. Pop your copy of The Sun down for a moment and try and answer it.

The point, which clearly went well over your head, is that you are but a very small cog in a very large machine. From your perspective you may be doing the very best job you can, but you are being failed by all the other cogs around you. Clear now?

Nope not when somebody uses the below nice generalisation to the entire workforce.

‘sack all the lazy, moaning idiots’

Can I call you an moaning and lazy idiot then?

It is interesting at least considering the alternatives. I think what I'd like to see is the government enforcing that a system works centrally but maybe regionalise the post, so something sent say within london or within the north west would remain with the same handler, whereas something sent from one to the other would pass between the organisations.

I didn’t read it how you did.

I read it as “sack all the lazy moaning idiots” whereas you’ve read it as “sack the whole workforce, they’re all lazy moaning idiots".... my opinion would be more along the lines of breaking the backs of the Unions...

Which is of course what I meant. I do wonder though whether he did misread and he actually accepts that the entire workforce are lazy and moaning idiots?

TNT already want it opened up so they can take on normal postal service while the strike is on, probably with a view to keep it going.

In the recent wake of events, I'm all for it.

If they're willing to take on the universal service obligation and not charge exhorbitant amounts to deliver to remote areas I'd say let them do it.

The current system is unworkable, and it's not the fault of the RM employees.

Unions are always short sighted and refuse to look at the bigger picture, the union leaders just bleed companies dry and claim its in the best interest of the workers. Long term stability is in the workers interests.

Also, why are all union representatives thicko's who can hardly grasp the English language!. uuuhhh we just want better pentions, more money, less hours and more time off. /wipes drool from mouth

:D

Thats the trouble though Royal Mail are bound by law to provide a universal service at a set price to every home in the UK, any competitor is not going to be willing or able to offer this. Private companies would cherry pick the best most profitable post for example stuff that is posted in London to other London addresses leaving those in rural comunities cut off from an affordable post service.

Like TNT doing business mail. doing the easy picking up and roughly sorting and leaving RM to do the stupidly expensive final delivery. The entire system and laws are a disgust at the moment.

Privatising would almost certainly lead to worse service and much much higher postage costs. The uk population is widely spread out compared to other countries.

Now if license where given out with the same mandate that RM has fixed price and service quality for the entire UK and A private company thinks it could make money. then give them a license. But in reallity they would be looking for a government bail outs within years, just like Train Operating companies.

Oh the irony. :o

Yesterday I got a job as a temp for Royal Mail, partly for the Christmas sorting but I've also volunteered to cover the strikes too.

So this afternoon I popped out to buy some safety boots for work. I got home and found that Royal Mail tried to deliver a parcel to me, and it's now back at the depot where I probably won't be able to collect it until next week due to them being on strike the next 2 days.

Even more annoying, the safety boots were out of stock in my size so I've had to order some online - which will now not get delivered until after the strikes...

If I get called in to work, and asked where my safety boots are, do you think they'll accept "somewhere in this sorting office" as an answer? :D

So if Royal Mail gets nuked and privatised the only downside is that it would be uneconomical to send birthday cards, christmas cards and postcards?

Good riddance in my opinion. Hate receiving them, and hate having the write the damn things even more.

Probably be less junk mail posted through my letterbox too.

.

How about the hundreads of letters we receive each year. Be it anything from contracts, bank statements, change in T&C.
For small businesses cheques, orders and so on.
