im planning on rebuilding my PC soon, recently deciest graphics card threw me off for a bit, but im getting a DFI LanParty DK X48-T2RS Intel X48 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard i think was wondering weather to get the ATI Radeon HD 5870/5850 or get another GTX295.... advice ?

thankyou,
Chris.

I would say a 5850 would be the best card for the money, I'd even say get 2 and crossfire them as they're not that far away from 5870s. Either way, I'd say steer clear from the 295, they're not worth even considering.

Just check your current MB can take SLI and Crossfire before you take the jump and change from NVIDIA to ATI otherwise you'll end up having to get a new MB

no i sold my old MB & CPU as they were pretty naff so im after getting new MB, CPU & GPU, im normally pretty good with PCs but i do appologise because im not sure what works on the 2 sides, i mean ive never touched ATI & AMD before but i know enough to know some things dont work with intel and so on, does ram need to be changed aswell?

I'm a newbie... just waiting for my system from OcUK..... but I can only recommend research, research, research!!!! I decided on CPU type first then GPU and found the best/compromise MB to fit that with a view to switching GPU in future..... I went ATI but got a MB that will take NVIDIA as well...... Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5... but as you will find, other chipsets & boards will support both or only one!!!!

aye its difficult rebuilding atm i got 8gb of DDR2 so finding a good MB that i can crossfire/sli with good speeds is hard as i dont wish to waste my nice ram is all

Can any motherboard do that yet?!

His post is slightly misleading (though I don't mean intentionally :)) but to me it appears that he's saying he bought a motherboard that worked with ATi and nVidia GPUs, which is a bad way to put it.

What he should have said was the board was compatible with both crossfire and SLi.

Any board will take any PCI-E card providing it's of the right type, but it's down to the type of PCI-E connection used, not whether the card is nVidia or ATi.

You'd be surprised, GPUs suck no where near as much power as people like to make out.

There are people on these board (Tom|nbk) for one, who has a P55 setup with an i5 quadcore CPU, 6GB RAM and a 5870 and his PC draws around 250w load when in games.

That's 250 from the wall too, so the PSU itself, depending on its efficiency rating will be around 210W~.

I'm not discouraging getting a good PSU, but 1000w PSU are massively overkill.

As long as your PSU can supply enough amps to the components then it'll be fine. Wattage is secondary to amperage, with in reason of course.

Most people would be fine with 5-600 PSUs that could provide sufficient amps.

High wattage PSUs are, in my opinion, an excuse to keep making higher priced PSUs.

Currently, you won't be able to get any DDR2 boards that can do both Crossfire and SLi, and to be honest, most SLi capable DDR2 boards are utter junk.

nVidia nforce chipsets have declined in quality massively.

Their best chipset was nForce 2. nForce 2 was the best chipset I've ever had on a motherboard, if they came out with a modern day nForce 2 like chipset (features wise? I'd buy one right up.

ok skip the SLI will there be a board that can crossfire with DDR2 ? if so is it gonna be good?
