As the title says really, I'm after views on sky and orange 20Mb BB from people who have it. I intend to use it for browsing, gaming and dl'ing. I'm currently on a 1 month rolling contract with plusnet, but the way they throttle at peak times is getting beyond a joke (dl'ing anything after 6pm throttled to 128kbs!!).

Thanks in advance. ...

I'm on Sky 20mb Unlimited & I can't say one bad thing about it, It has been flawless since the day we had it installed about 5months ago now :)

13567 kbps download & 926 kbps upload & it is at that 24/7 :)

Moved from 10mb Virgin Cable :)

Remember if you choose Sky you have to take their TV package as well you can't just get the broadband on its own.

Hi Mattey1, thanks for the reply, what's it like in the evening ? does you notice an slowdown. Also do you game on it ? if so doe sit get laggy during peak periods ?

Historically Orange have had a very poor reputation, they're probably best avoided. Sky/Easynet on the other hand are relatively decent.

hmm , I've just been looking into these forums further and found that I can get 24mb ADSL through adsl24. This is now making me re think.
Certainly the more I read about orange the more I think they are to be avoided + they insist on a 18 month contract, which is just excessive.

New decision, Sky or ADSL24, I might try ADSL24 as they are only on a 1 month contract, if they're good I'll stick if not maybe Sky will get me business for a year.

Sky unlimited connection has literally no limits. They do not have any fair use clause.

However, other providers like O2 and Be, whilst having a fair use clause pretty are very generous. You'd have to be pulling crazy amounts to get in trouble.

ADSL24 seem to be a lot more expensive than Sky (I assume you normally have SkyTV anyway since you are considering them).

I have Sky TV but don't want to take Sky talk so it would be £15 a month. The ADSL24 is £19 so not much more, I guess on paper Sky still looks best, I'm just a little wary in case I sign up for 1 year and find there is something I don't like.
Oh that reminds me, with Sky can you use your own router ? or do they make you use the one they provide ?
Anyone got PC gaming experience on Sky ?

Of course it has a fair use policy...

http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/broadband/terms/usagepolicies

ACCEPTABLE USE POLICY

Irrespective of which Product you have subscribed to, our Acceptable Use Policy ("AUP") will apply to you and those who you allow to use Sky Broadband.

If you have any queries about our AUP, you can contact us by emailing [email protected].

Thats for the capped products.

Sky Broadband Unlimited has no fair use clause.

edit:

Hmmm, seems you're right. I know at the beginning of this year, they made a lot of commotion of having no FUP.

AUP could just mean doing illegal stuff, rather than usage limit.

edit2:

In fact thats exactly what it means, read below the AUP line, where they outline everything.

Do you think any ISP would be stupid enough not to include some provision for defining acceptable usage in the contract? It's in there, whether it's obvious or not.

No they really dont, cos Im looking at them for my new flat

Truly unlimited broadband
Sky Broadband Unlimited now offers a truly unlimited broadband service with no fair usage policy restrictions and no broadband speed caps. If you sign up for our Sky Broadband Unlimited service it means you will be free to download as much as you want, whenever you want.

We also promise to customers taking our Base, Everyday or Unlimited products that we won't slow down connection speeds at peak times. So whether you want to download a movie at 7am or a music track at 7pm, you'll still be able to enjoy the same consistent speed.

yer, that's the LLU BB, I was looking at the Home 30, still 24mb just not on LLU, do you think there will be a massive difference ?

Don't know what difference there is between a llu line and normal line to the end user. But if you feel 30GB is enough, shouldn't matter too much.

Also, my price was wrong, the llu package is £26 a month. Slightly better.

No slowdown whatsoever here, Pings are usually between 30 & 45 that is without my max delay being 8 as well :) I Cannot say I've experienced any lag.

Hmm, the sky unlimited certainly does look good and Sky have LLU on my exchange. Now I'm starting to think Sky unlimited for 1 year is the way forward, can anyone comment on whether you can use your own router and what gaming is like in the evening ?

You can use your own router but it is against the Sky T&C's, A lot of people do it anyway. You need to extract the user name & password from the Sky router, There is more about that on the skyuser forums.

To clarify a few things, you don't have to take skys telephone service at all, but if you are a current Sky tv subscriber you can get there unlimited for £10 a month.

If you are not a Sky tv customer the cost per month is £15, neither of these require you to take there telephone service.

How do i know this, i took out Broadband with sky long before i got there phone service, so costs where £10 if i had sky tv, £15 if i did'nt, but i did so i got it cheaper.

Also Sky has allways had a FUP (fair useage policy) its just that they have never todate had to act on it, I think i got told by one of there tier 2 tech guys one time that they don't even look at people unless they get near the 200gb a month region, and then only if it goes on month after month.

So if u have sky tv then trully unlimited broadband for £10 a month can't go wrong really, even if you don't have there tv service (only basic pacakage needed), £15 is still cheap.

Also remember no matter who u go with an LLU or Adsl2 provider your speed will allways depend on ur line length and line quality from the exchange.

As previously said u have to use skys routers, there not to bad really, but best place to check how to get the info to use ur own routers is, skyuser.co.uk.

Also sky are very nice to gamers, just like be internet, all you have to do is ring them up and ask them to reduce your delays as you are a gamer and they will happly change your profile, ofcourse in some cases this may reduce speed abit, but its good that they offer this, again they don't advertise this, but info is on skyuser too.

You can only get the Unlimited package for £10 if you take Sky talk, It is £15 otherwise even if you do have the TV.

More about that here: http://www.sky.com/portal/site/skycom/skyproducts/broadband/pricesandoptions/max

Incorrect. Sky BB Unlimited, does not have an FUP.

Look here for the changes.

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-broadband-help/251-sky-broadband-fup-fair-useage-policy.html

Only Sky BB Connect has traffic shaping, usage caps are not strict i.e. you don't get charged for using above usage caps.

FUP does not exist.

AUP =! FUP
