Love the way people want to play God and decide who gets to live and die who gets treated and not. I also love the I'm paying for this attitude. No you are not personally paying for anything.

So what will happen if you have a car crash one day and need to spend a few months in an ITU - will you agree to have all the treatment terminated once a cost is reached that exceeds what you have personally contributed? Only fair eh wouldn't want to waste money would we I mean you don't have to drive - your choice to get into that car no-one forced you.

There's only so much money to go around... There's many things I'd rather see it spent on than paying carers to overfeed someone.

Which was the point of my earlier post - there are so many things which could be deemed unnecessary and the majority of the general public have no idea where money is really wasted. This story might sell papers but there are far more "wasteful" patients groups than this one. I can think of at least five patient categories straight away without any effort whatsoever.

But who plays God. Until someone has got a good answer to this the whole discussion is pointless. Who could entrust such a decision to? The one group people might trust are the very group that can not by their codes of professional conduct and ethics. And like I said who personally would be willing to turn off their care once they themselves got to expensive? No-one.

Cases like this are rarely quite as cut-and-dry as the papers would have you believe and are most likely not solved by screaming "put the ****in fork down" either. Hence the op might be a good idea.

No I did'nt I'm realy p************sssssssed off that a GP considers that treating diabetics is a waste of mony, what next, cancer suffers? well I suppose that in the short term might cost more, so a quick saving?

In all fairness a GP is not the right person to be treating a specific condition the General part of their name is there for a reason their job is triage in the main. I would think getting a referral to a Diabetic Nurse would give you far more joy.

Is this chap 70stone because he can't move, or can't move because he's 70stone?

I imagine if he undertook a basic diet (i.e. not 4 x large fish, chips & pies for lunch) and just got to a stage where he could walk around a small amount - the weight would drop off him at a tremendous level!

I saw this on the news and thought his weight gain is probably due to eating, no specific reason has been given though so it makes it kinda hard for me to pass judgement. I would say is nobody should be allowed to just die so the decision to give him the operation can't really be debated.

So reminds of the episode in the Simpsons where Homer gets too fat to work.

Seems like a good idea to me. Stuff my face all day, get too fat to do anything, end up wearing a big tent size shirt (no need for underwear) and sit on my fat lazy arse all day doing nothing and raking in all the disability allowance. Brilliant.

Where do I sign up? :p

They've already played god by helping him to live, by feeding him and looking after him, without them he would not have got as fat as he is and would not have continued to do so. He is not in gods hands anymore he is in the nurses hands.

They are not playing god they are doing their jobs according to their professional codes of practice. They are bound by ethical codes which include the concepts of beneficence and non-maleficence and in this case I guess they have thought around those two issues.

Would you not want them to follow those codes if you was in an RTA and some bean counter thought your ITU stay was getting a bit expensive. Or is it okay to only withdraw care from people who have medical needs you do not have the sufficient medical expertise to understand.

Agree with Calabi, we've played god keeping this sack of lard alive, now we're going to throw more of our finite resources at him? This is madness.. no it's not, it's full cream madness.

He is being fed. Someone is doing this to him.

If he were left alone he wouldn't be this fat.

The people giving him this food are the problem, why can't they simply slowly reduce his food intake.

There is always a over caring mother or partner behind these people that is ultimetly just as responsible. If anything they should be up for abuse charges.

Only very rarely do i believe someone deserves to die, I don't like this man but I don't believe he should be denied healthcare because he's a fat lazy waste of space.
No one should be denied medical treatment, we live in a civilised country, if you deny someone medical treatment for a life threatening illness you're effectively giving them a death sentence.
