New Stargate series - Stargate Universe

After last nights episode I've decided to watch a few more.

There were two very nice reasons to watch that I hadn't noticed before. So nice I had to pause, rewind, and watch them walk in again.

Clearly quite cold on Destiny then.

At the moment this show reminds me a lot of 5th Gear. A show that's seen another do well with a different style and tried to copy it without really having the talent to do it properly or understand just how that other show made it work.

I'm willing to give it more of a chance though. A lot of shows are pretty weak in the first season as they find their footing. I could see them dropping a lot of what isn't really working at the moment by the time they come to the end of this run or the start of the next season.

Joseph Mallozis (writer/producer on SGU) blog usually has some answers on the little things people are wondernig about such as the kino etc.

Answer: And how exactly were they supposed to do that? The control to seal the door wasn’t some giant button they could sail the kino into in the hopes that the impact would initiate the seal. In fact, you can see the senator first press one button on the seat console, then move down to press another. The kino’s surface area wouldn’t have allowed for pinpoint accuracy. Yes, Rush had a pencil, and even IF someone happened to have brought the masking tape to fasten it to the kino, you’re making several more assumptions: 1) that in the short time Eli has been working with the kino, he would be capable of controlling it with the accuracy needed to hit those particular buttons, and 2) the kino would possess enough force to trigger the buttons.

Ah, I sees now.

I dont understand why they dont use the communication devices to get some experts onbaord and help figure the mess out. Rodney would have power up and going in 2mins flat.

If I recall correctly, once the stones have been touched by certain people, they are keyed into that one person and can't be reprogrammed.

So they may have had the stones set up for regular communication at their original base and had no need for sciencey people at that time.

did you notice the hugeness of the soldiers breasts in tonights episode? the camara man/director defintately made them easy to see!

Yes that was awesome! <3 warrior women! Definitely want moar of her ;)

Ep4 was a pretty naff episode really - you'd think at least a few people would be upset about the people who went missing going to the locked planet in Ep3. I find it difficult to believe that the Ancients would have got their sums wrong with that orbital slingshot.

Look what I found :D

Answer: You’re assuming that while Earth has made progress with its shields and weaponry, the rest of the galaxy has remained stagnant.

I don't like this... complete ignorance of their own back story... while granted the rest of the galaxy would probably be improving their tech...

The reason why the hammond was unable to win against a relative small number of ships was due to not at that point in the timeline being fully upgraded to the asgard tech... it doesn't have the computer core, nuclear compliment (not asgard obviously), or uprated asgard weapons - only the basic asgard rig out - the advanced asgard shields were being installed at the time but were probably still running in "debug" mode. It was the last in line for these upgrades over the ships that we know of.

Several other answers display a lack of knowledge of their own backstory and even the scripts :(

Series creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper established everything from the tone of the show and the look of the ship to the individual characters. Using Air I, II, and III as a template, the rest of the writers simply followed their lead. Brad and Rob have overseen all aspects of production to ensure it remains true to their original vision for the show, sitting in on all meetings and doing passes on all scripts.

This is a bit more promising...

The stones just need to be initialised or turned on by someone with the ancient gene, then afterwards they can be used by anyone.

About the Hataks, i agree it is a bit strange, the power of spaceships is commonly changed to suit the plot in sc fi, (star trek is another massive offender). Its for this reason they had to say that the Odyssey was on a secret mission in the Stargate Atlantis finale, otherwise it would have been to easy to defeat the superhive what with a zpm powered 304 with all of the latest asgard tech installed, covenioently added to allow Atlantis to show up.

Their reasoning for the one sided battle in the universe premiere seems to be a bit of a poor cop out.

OK, is anyone else getting really mugged off with the same 'dirty border' filter they use over half the shots in this show?

They have also started to rip off signature BSG elements, like the fast zoom shots onto peoples faces, and the use of the term 'FTL Drives'.

I'm enjoying the show, but do not see why they have to emulate BSG. Some originality would be nice/

Its not emulating its just a coincidence. The Destiny isn't travelling through hyperspace but is travelling with a form of faster than light travel hence why the characters are saying its going in and out of ftl. I'd imagine they way the describe it might change once they actually have time to find out how its travelling.

FTL (other than hyperspace) has been used by Asgard before, so it's not something new invented for SGU.

The coincidences seem to be stacking up though. For example in every previous Stargate the characters were always full of desirable qualities, now they are all deeply flawed personalities who like to fight amongst themselves. There is dissension in the ranks.

Even little things like the ever present hum and rumble of the ships engines remind me of the creaky old Galactica.

The Term FTL has been around for years in science fiction, long before the re-imagined BSG.

On another note, loved the shots of the Destiny in orbit of the Gas Giant, the visuals have definitely been upped several notches.

The dirty borders is a kinda cool effect... ruined by the constant useage of it in that episode... that and the people talking into the camera really grated for me...

I wish after the first 2 episodes they'd taken the whole thing slower... they could have done a lot more exploring of the ship and dragged out the whole stabalishing the life support for a couple of episodes or more and still been interesting and also a good way to expand the characters.
