Hey guys,

about to buy a shiny new 37" telly - I have always liked Sony so am looking at the different versions available which are the S, V & W panels - my first question is whether the £100-odd step up between the 3 versions is justified or worth paying? the top one for example is £689...

the only reason its a tricky one is that when you look at the specs in compare mode they all look bloody identical

my second question is whether for this money I'm going to get a much better telly if I go for Panasonic?

Thanks chaps :)

I'm in the market for a 37 too but have been reading some discouraging reviews about the Sony screens. Aparently there are some serious backlighting issues that really muck up the picture. Most of the reviews I've read say that they're great panels with good picture quality and definition but the backlight bleed can really ruin the experience.

I'm no expert buy I believe the main differences between the three models is down to the image processing engines - the top model has the Bravia Engine 3 and Motionflow 100Hz.

If anyone has any other thoughts, I'd also welcome some suggestions!!

Basically (off the top of my head, using my mobile on a train >_>)..

S: Bravia Engine, 25,000:1
V: Bravia Engine 2, 30,000:1, Motionflow 120Hz
W: Bravia Engine 2, 30,000:1, Motionflow 120Hz

The W does have a couple extra image quality features, but not really worth mentioning.

Anyway, it all depends on what you're using your TV for, is it for gaming or watching movies / TV?

I would personally recommend looking at the Panasonic range or the 37X10/G10 in particular (G series if you have some spare cash :D) - better picture quality and general viewing compared to those Sony ones.

iv just got the 42x10 and its pretty amazing. I did a lot of research and for the pricing point it was ahead by a mile. A few internet searchs will get you an amazing price for the 37" plus its 24fps, 100Hz double scan so quick sports look great. Plus it is one of the better SD viewers from what i read. Also won a what hi-fi award

Thats completely wrong! :p

It should be:

KDL-37S5500, Bravia Engine 2, 33000:1
KDL-37V5500, Bravia Engine 3, 50000:1
KDL-37W5500, Bravia Engine 3, 50000:1, Motionflow 100Hz

I personally didnt rate the Panasonic, too many little niggles for me. Yes the Sony has the backlight bleed problem. However, unless your going to be completely anual about it your not going to notice it. Also if you have the extra space the 40/42" models may be better bang for buck.

I was originally going for the 37, but due to current price drops cuz the new versions are coming in the 40" was just too good a deal...

I missed the boat on the 600 quid ones from Argos but I paid £699 and for what I have got I'm over the moon - getting Sky HD put in later today aswell so well chuffed :)

(missus aint too happy tho - we upgraded from a 26" which she thought was "just right" :p)
