What is it about this that many people seem to dislike so much?

Personally I haven't had any problems with it and actually think that its a good thing.
I like being able to connect to Live on the PC, contact people on my friends list and get achievements playing games on the platform I prefer. I for one want to see the service expand to cover more games.

The only bad thing that I have experienced is the strange place which it saved information to.

Most people just moan about it because it's hip. The only thing it lacks is a IM like communication service like Steam.

Oh and the matchmaking on some games is rather lame (Dawn of War 2 for one).

I've had a bunch off issues with GFWL, firstly Fallout 3 refusing to update and crashing, and if you cant update you cant login and cant load your saves. Secondly with DOW2, I keep on getting sign in errors (it doesn't think Im connected to the internet) which I thought I solved but i still get them randomly.

In my opinion it would be much better if you could sort all the updating and logins outside of the games, so when you go to play somthing you're all set to go.

Ive never really had too much of a problem with GFWL, but i think having a 360 and how it all works there helped a lot about how the system works. 1 thing that does annoy me however is the limited activations related to signing into live (not the game itself).

It's obtrusive and it gets in my way, it never holds onto my account settings despite doing my best to fix this. Everytime I log into DoW2 it complains that I need a new windows live account, then sends me to an external browser which I close and go right back into the game to type in my account details. It then downloads my profile again.

It's a pain, why on earth DoW2 needed it I will never know.

Oh and using it for GTA4 was a pain as well... and fallout 3.

I just find it to be a clunky obtrusive system but I am used to how well Steam works now. Remember how that used to be?

I think its great never had any major problems.

Many gamers hate MS regardless which is just hypocritical anyway as you need their OS + Direct X etc etc ;)

MS have put a lot of time/money into GFWL but it does share the Xlive infrastructure so you have to endure some of the 360 style design and the Xlive staff manage it. MS have now made it much easier for developers & publishers to make games for it as they have a self certificate program which means most of the work can be done before giving it to MS.

85% of the Xlive code is already in PC games which get released on 360 so why they do not make more effort to release more games is purely down to the publishers not wanting to push PC gaming as consoles generate 75%+ more revenue so PC gaming is not a priority just a niche market now.

99.9% of all GFWL issues are related to user security/firewall settings and MS have a very detailed support section on how to fix this anyway!

DoW2 has never given me any problems with GfWL

So it would seem that most problems are on the users end?
