Hi, I'm a bit stumped on what to get - there seem to be quite a few that look good but I'm unsure. If anyone could recommend one that would be very helpful please. It will be on an MSI GD790-FX Motherboard if that makes any difference.

Anyone? More specifically, one that doesn't require I take out the MB to fit it. I'm looking to get it to around 3.8-4.0 (if 4.0 isn't pushing it?).

I just bought a 965 and just using the stock cooler which is keeping CPU nice and cool, haven't found a reason to overclock as its fast enough to run every new game I own and will be getting. Find overclocking and stressing components pointless, if you want faster buy faster.

If you want to overclock, you'll need a decent cooler, and to fit a decent cooler you generally have to remove the motherboard from the case!

I've got a Titan Fenrir cooler on mine, never goes over about 50C when the rooms hot and it's overclocked to 3.8ghz at the max safe voltage of 1.55v. (Apparantly this is the max, I've heard of some people going to 1.6v but I decided to pack it in at 3.8ghz).

After about 3.6-3.7ghz, the temps rise rapidly. You'll need a really decent cooler to get 4ghz if mine's anything to go by!

Might be an idea to get one of these to go on it aswell: http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=FG-022-SY&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=4

You can't run the standard fan at full chat because the noise is horrendous, whereas that one is 2db quieter at full speed, but because it shifts 32cfm more than the standard one, you can probably run it slower, so it'll be nice and quiet.

If you go for the Titan Fenrir, be aware that it is physically huge, it covers over one of my DIMM slots on the board, and is about 10-15mm away from touching the side panel.

But you can't go any faster? The 965 is the fastest clocked AMD ever. I suppose you could argue that you need to go i7, but in stock form I'd be surprised if an i7 out performed a 965BE.

Okay thanks for all the information. I was looking at the Titan Fenrir - but as you say I'ts pretty big, I'll have to see if I have enough room left in my case. I think 4ghz is a bit ambitious for me, so I'd be happy with 3.7/8.

I just got the sunbeam core contact freezer but build my pc this weekend so ill let you know :-)

i've got one of those on my 955 BE, mine will get to 3.7ghz with a bit of tinkering and still have okay temps but i cant get to 3.8ghz or above simply because i'm not a great overclocker. 3.8 should be okay for a 965 but 4ghz i think would need water cooling, and a lot of patience and even then it might not be stable. oh forgot to mention it can be a bitch to fit i've got the cuts to prove it. instead of just pressing the lever down i found it usefull to also press down on the mechanism aswell because it takes quite a bit of force to get it over the retention clips.

I doubt you'd need water cooling to reach 4ghz, mine never goes over 50C at 3.8ghz, and the CPU fan is set to about 40%. The trouble I find with these isn't keeping it cool, it's stopping it from crashing!
