What the world would be like without war - or, in fact, if there was just one united country?

Would this be a utopian society, with research and technology far beyond our own? Famine and hunger unheard of?

We would be back in the stone age. Dying younger and having no way to fight against disease. Having to scrimp and scrape for food, usually hovering on the starvation line.

Why would we be back in the stone age?

There would be mass unemployment if every country disbanded their Army, Navy and Air Force. Bad times :(

Could the money spent on the MOD not be put towards manufacturing/services if defence was not as much of a necessity?

It wouldnt cause unemployment because the money is there to pay for these people.

Probably the total opposite, as alreeady said war accelerates research and technology.

Famine and hunder would be massive as everyone would be fighting for the land

Infact, we would probably all end up dieing or killing each other... ironic?!

surely people wouldn't be fighting over the land, as you'd have one central rule. It's not like we fight over land in this country!

and i realise war accelerates research - but the trillions spent on military expenditure would be saved, and no doubt much of that would be put into research.

(I plan to make this happen, by the way)

Probably all have nothing, as it's been stated, most technology is advanced through fear, build something to be better than your neighbour, look at the space race for example, massive leaps (and small steps) because Russia and USA were paranoid about each other.

individuals in society would have very little as the wealth of the world would be spread so thin to try and accomodate everyone, nearly to communist levels

Pay for these people to do what, claim benefits on the dole? Think of all the manufacturing and services that will also be stopped and cut when the armed forces go. All those boats, armoured vehicles, planes, weapons and clothing would no longer be built or needed, more cut backs and job losses

Perhaps I am mistaken, but I think some members are responding to a different question to what I imagine the OP asked. I believe he asked:

What would the world be like today without war?

Rather than:

What would have the world been like if there had historically been no war or conflicts?

I see no reason why the world would not be a better place today without conflict or war, although that doesn't mean that commercial practices will triumph over solving all the world's problems.

Even if there was a single nation without the "killing each other with tanks and planes" type of war there'd still be factions with different aims and goals struggling against each other to advance their own beliefs at the expense of others whether those beliefs are political, religious or financial. As such the world wouldn't really be much different.

people are too greedy and petty and self centered, it could be a perfect world, but human nature will probably never allow it. Imagine what could be done if all human effort went into one thing, if space exploration just imagine what could be done if resources and money didn't matter.

Oh, he was asking what would happen if human nature suddenly changed completely and war was eradicated? Well if human nature was truly changed then it would be paradise..although i suspect that would be totally impossible and the only way to remove war would be to suppress the entire human population by force of arms or drugs :o

The personal motivation of a great majority of individuals would be severely lacking.

Saying that, as geeky as Star Trek is, the original "utopian" vision of the Trek universe is actually not a bad one. it was very well realised in that they understood this hand holding vision for the future hippy types seem to have is simply not workable as more dont want it than do. We want to be able to better ourselves, prove ourselves to our friends and family. We do this through competition (of all kinds).

you can alos argue, the only reason the ST society works is because although the humans are united as one, the rest of the universe is not!

I simply cannot like everyone I meet, personally I try and temper myself so not to cause conflict with those people, other people prefer conflict to let the person they dont like know what it is they dont like about them, call it the need to dominate if you will. This very simple aspect of human nature (which lets face it is actually animal behaviour, its just we can rationalise it) negates the possibility that we can all just simply "get along". And this isn't being defeatist, it's being realistic.

Once people stop wishing for "world peace" and realise it's never going to happen, we can find alternative better solutions that work hand in hand with our own nature, rather than hoping every single human born in the future will have the same, non-conflicting nature. I actually think, given the scale of our race... we are doing pretty well on the whole...
