£1000-£1500 Mile Munching Diesel

I only thought they did Zetec petrols? Isn't it a similar system to vtec? I must admit my ford knowledge is limited...

Ah - Zetec is a trim level now, not an engine. Mine's a Zetec-S TDCi for example.

Zetec's the one above LX, the one you want if you're on a budget really.

The petrol engines are Duratec and the diesels are Duratorq now :)

Generally reliable, they have a DMF and use a BMW diesel engine that's known for MAF issues, but that aside damn good cars for wafting about in; they actually have quite a few awards.

Prices seem to have taken a nose-dive of late, just keep a few hundred in the bank - DMF issues aren't common but as with anything can cost a fair whack to sort.

Well worth it, although I'd hunt for the Connoisseur spec - all the toys with Climate control, and they don't really demand a premium.

:)

Most modern dervs have DMFs - even Firestar_3x's petrol Passat had one go pop, its not a Mondeo only issue - only more common in the Mondeo because they're more common cars :)

The 75 always seemed like a very wafty car - not the sort of thing I'd have but might be up the OP's alley.

Fair enough, they are very wafty but can handle too.

They never really offered anything up my street so to speak, hence I went for it's predecessor, the 600. As the 600 and 75 are similar size-wise to a Mondeo, the 75 is a viable option if the engine requirements are met, the 1.8 K series is an econoimical and capable engine that is more than likely to deliver good MPG and be relatively trouble-free.

What a 600 offer that the 75 doesn't?

The reason I wanted a quicker car, the 2L T series engine. Stopped in 1999 due to rising emmisions standards, it wasn't included in the 75 lineup.

I found a 220 Turbo Coupe and drove that, however you could feel the chassis couldn't really deal with the power well.

Sort the alignment and wheel balancing out on my current Petrol and hope the rust doesn't spread and nothing breaks on it then...

I'm not really a fan, I always liked the turbo pull and the tuning abilities, plus a £800 cambelt change scares me somewhat.

Combined with the 4-5mpg extra I get with the T16 having the wrong number of cylinders is worth it :p

Gotcha, and I'm guessing Ghia is the trim level above Zetec? The Ghia's I've seen seem to have leather seats and other nice goodies... But they all seem to be above 2k so a little out of budget.

Kind of yeh. You've got Zetec and Zetec-S which are the semi-"sporty" ones, Ghia and Ghia X which are the luxury ones and Titanium/Titanium X which are the techy ones with the gadgets.(although not introduced till later, in line with the facelift I believe)

Ghias shouldnt be that much more expensive - the nice stuff like leather wasnt standard on the normal Ghia.
