*** The Official OcUK Windows 7 Opinions Thread ***

Loving Windows 7 so far, not really come up against any problems yet. I was a big fan of the classic start menu but I've found myself seeing the benefits of the one on Windows 7, it works very well just takes a bit of getting use to, like the taskbar system - which is superb.

One thing that shocked me was that Windows 7 could play the obscure HD movies I'd taken on holiday on my Panasonic FZ38, XP wouldn't, Vista had problems with them even with the software installed but for some reason Windows 7 can play them straight off the bat! :D

Check you have the latest drivers for the motherboard. W7 64bit Ultimate runs without a hint of slow down on my IP35 Pro, however, I have a Q6600, but your CPU should cope fine?

Installed W7HP yesterday and installation was a breeze :)

One thing I'm not liking though is ClearType!!!

Text on my screen actually looks much crisper with ClearType unchecked...but the toolbar menu text (bookmarks, history etc) still looks crap, as does some other text (email for instance) :(

Other than that, I'm liking it....so far.

I installed my HP this morning and didnt have a single problem. Runs great. Bit miffed my velociraptor only gets 5.9 in the score index tho, my old 5400RPM drive got that

installation was very easy and fairly speedy, as was re-installing everything, the whole GUI looks improved and i'm still seeing nice little effects every now and then that make it appeal even more BUT it seems to run like a dog on my system (e5200, 4gb RAM, HD 4830 512mb etc), it takes about an extra minute from boot before i can actually do anything than it did in vista, it seems to hang when i try to transfer files, my RAM usage is more than it was in vista just sitting at the desktop.

overall i'd say i'm pretty unimpressed, i'm almost certain i'll be going back to vista and flogging it on but i'll give it a fair trial first, see if it settles down.

oh, that and i've cocked up my WMP12 already, tried to revert it back to 11 following a guide so that i could have the toolbar (ffs, why wmp12 doesn't have it is anybodies guess!) and i can't download wmp 12 from MS nor can i seem to be able to work out how to do a fix from the disc manually. oh well

I've done two installs on the same machine.First an upgrade which took around 2hrs and went smoothly everything transferred and worked fine.It wasn't any faster than Vista (1min 20 to boot up).I then did a custom install which hanged on the first attempt but was fine on the second, again speed (boot up etc) similar to Vista

Computer is Core 2 Duo 2.66Ghz with 4GB of RAM,500GB HDD

I love it so far, much better than vista, i did like vista but 7 is much better at everything.

Only problem I've had so far is the aero animation was very slow when i booted up today, but restarting seemed to fix it.

Has that happened to anyone? I guess it's probably a bug.

Install went well on my laptop and new i7 rig, only thing i can't work out (not had a lot of time to play) is if i click on the ie icon on the task bar i want a new page to open but it doesnt-i have to right click and select ie-can i change that behaviour????

I have installed it on about 10 computers at work and everything is smooth at the moment. They range from older PCs with 1gb ram and integrated graphics to 4gb ram and Geforce 9 series.

My luck however would be that wehn I've installed it at home, it keeps crashing with the drivers Windows itself installed. Its a media centre PC with 2gb ram, Athlon 64 x2 processor and an Abit AN-M2HD mobo (integrated nvidia 7050PV, etc)

My surprise, when I go to the Abit site, not only are there no Windows 7 drivers, but the 'latest' chipset drivers for Vista 64-bit are from back in 2007 and all their links to drivers time out anyway!

(Judging from the fact that the 'latest news' on the Abit site is from 2008, I think I'm pretty shafted and so is their company).

Still waiting for mine to be delivered by ocuk :(

But agree with people above that Vista was fine, I've never used W7... wanted to save that pleasure for full release, but Vista is perfectly fine and always has been.

If you look at the wikipedia page for them Abit closed up shop at the beginning of the year. It was mentioned on the forums at the time so a search will probably have details.

Anyway .... installed Windows 7 HP on to one of my HTPC's today .... had a couple of issues but they were disk related and unrelated to the Windows install, (I was swapping the system disk to make it easier to back out as I had a spare and had a slight issue with boot orders and ACHI but that was sorted in the end).

Install was reasonably quick (AMD 4450e with 2GB and onboard ATI 3200 graphics) and the installer picked up all the hardware except for the IMON screen on the Fusion case.

Overall, system seems pretty snappy and the interface is pretty clean. System was running Vista previously and seems to be running faster than it was previously, (although that's purely subjective). Network file transfers do seem to be quite a bit faster than they were (that's transferring from a NAS to a Linux file server).

Installed Home Premium on a Dell 3100C with 2GB RAM, P4 3GHz CPU. Went for the 64bit install and impressed. This was for my mother.

I'll do mine when I get home, 6715b laptop and a Q6600 desktop. However may change some bits first.

What is the sweet spot for RAM with 64bit? Just interested to see what people think?

Well, it's still running fine on day two...and I'm slowly getting used to the text issue.

Is there any way to reduce the size of the shortcut arrow by any chance as it practically covers the whole icon! O.K that's a slight exaggeration...but it does seem pretty big.

I installed Everest Ultimate today too, and with the big shortcut arrow and the UAC shield I can hardly see the icon at all!

Oh, and my Razer Deathadder doesn't feel as responsive as it used to either, even with the latest driver and my personal tweaks applied :(

I still quite like it though :)

Another good feature I've found is that Windows can now burn ISO images - very useful for me! Saves installing IMGBurn, etc.
