Face it, every month we all enthuse over a new phone. But now and then one comes along and it makes us all go "Ooh", and then if very good "Ahh"... but sometimes you get a "zomgwtf". This is one of those times... and is it an Apple? No. A HTC? Nay. A Nokia? Negative, captain. It's a Motorola. The Motorola Droid.

We absolutely nailed this puppy to the wall over and over and over again, so it’s only fitting we’d be doing the first actual unveiling, right? We’re not going to get too in-depth though, that will come at a later time. Here are some brief thoughts before the photos:

  • It’s running Android 2.0. Duh.
  • It’s thin. Just slightly thicker than an iPhone 3GS and the thinnest QWERTY-slider we’ve ever seen.
  • It is the fastest Android device we’ve ever used. (It’s running a TI OMAP3430 processor)
  • The feel of the device is very reminiscent of the OQO 02 model computer. Just smaller. It’s metal with a non-spring-assisted slide, very sturdy, and half soft-touch plastic.
  • Awesome capacitive display. Plus it’s huge. Easily the best screen we’ve ever seen on an Android handset, and an amazing screen overall.
  • The QWERTY keyboard is actually pretty usable and has a soft-touch rubberized finish. We’ve been told the keyboard design isn’t final on this unit, thus the two no-shows.
  • Have we mentioned this phone flies? It’s the Android device to beat, and easily the most impressive. From what we’ve been told, Google had a direct hand in the Motorola Droid. Something to the point of almost dictating every move Motorola made when designing and making the phone. Interesting, huh?
  • There’s a desktop cradle/charger that will ship with the Motorola Droid that we’ve been playing around with. It turns your Droid into a “multimedia station” and displays local weather, the time, etc.
  • No one wants to listen, but it makes the CLIQ looks like a child’s toy (partly because it is, and partly because the Droid, even in its non-final form, is the most impressive phone we’ve used since the iPhone. It’s positively amazing).
Ok, enough of that — enjoy the photos! We’ll put together a nice little review soon.
More general info: http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2354641,00.asp

550MHz TI OMAP3430 processor, same as in the iPhone 3GS yet specced 50mhz slower. It's fast.

GPU:

PowerVR GPU, same as in the iPhphone 3GS.

5 megapixel camera with 4x zoom, DVD quality video recording, autofocus and a dual LED flash

Accessories Included:

A 16GB microSD card

So in other words... what we have is an Android 2.0 handset with a full WWERTY that is onlz a fraction bigger than the iPhone in dimension, and yet has a beautiful high-resolution glass capacitive screen, a 5MP camera, a beefy battery, and pretty much everything else you can ask for barring a xenon flash.

Anyone else in love? :D

No point in getting excited over CDMA/EV-DO phones, they are incompatible with the GSM/UMTS networks here.

Also Motorola phones have historically been awful, so I'll wait before I get excited.

My first ever phone was a Motorola! :)

I've never regarded Motorola's highly, maybe this will change my oppinion of them. I will wait though. It does look good.

Ill keep my eye on this along with the Xperia X10.

Android seems to be the way to go anyways :D

I was going to make a thread on this as it's certainly very impressive. The speed, the big screen, the newest version of the OS, proper keyboard.
Just won't work over here though, hope it comes

They've got the right idea, but the phone itself is hideous :/

Unattractive, yes. Hideous, no imo. I could live ith the looks for functionality like that. Hopefully it may revieve a couple of cosmetic tweaks for the EU market...

That phone looks amazing, I like the style, it's straight cut and minimal and only wish for the directional pad to be on the left so my NES emu can be used without issue.

If this phone keeps its DVD quality recording and bundles the multifunction dock then I may well look at getting this off contract and selling the Magic, like I said in the Magic/Hero thread I am waiting for /the/ Android phone as I'm hooked on Android now as I believe it is the best phone OS to ever be released and it's only the handset now to wait for that shows it off completely.

This looks like it!

I'm not sure I like the idea of a physical keyboard. I have no issues using the soft, virtual, keyboard on my magic.

As with mrk I'm an Android fanboi and can't imagine using a different phone OS. I look forward to seeing whats available to get next summer when I shall change from my Magic.

After using the Nokia 5800's awful virtual keyboard and screen, which is near-unsusable at speed without a stylus, I feel a hardware keyboard is a must.

The 5800 is hardly the pinnacle of niceness when it comes to VKeyboard or screen quality now.

Use any Android phone or an iPhone to get a proper feel of how a virtual keyboard should be.

I do agree, but there is just something about it. I dont like the little "lip" thing at the bottom. I would prefere it not there.

Would look much better if it was all smooth, and they got rid of that.

Maybe i'm just being picky, but when i look at the phone it doesn't make me think "woah". It should really, but for some reason it doesn't

The keyboard is nice, i dont think ill use it much, but its there if needed so thats a bonus really.

Look pretty ugly to me, as for Motorola Im unsure about their cameras, and the keyboard looks dire. Im also concerned about Android, it eats batteries - Ill hold proper judgement and wait for the real life reports.
