Currently looking at this Asus card for an SSF build, mainly due to the lack of plastic that comes with the reference coolers. Anyway, I've already tried the similar (cooler wise) ENGTS250 Glaciator, which sounds like a frickin jet engine, even when the fan is @ 40%. :(

So my question is... has anyone tried this card and how loud is the cooler?

Sorry not able to answer your question mate, but is watercooling an option?

CPU = yes (done), GPU = not possible in this build. ;) Basically need a quiet, powerful, yet fairly compact solution. I'm looking at the Gainward and the Asus ATM. However, Gainward GS card draws more power than competition.

The glaciator coolers are dreadful. I would buy a reference 260 as the heat will be ejected from the case.

Yes I know, however, this is what I'm up against:

Either I stick with the GTS250... or cut a small hole in the front of the case, then the GTX 260 will just fit. When the plastic bezel clips on the front it will hide the end of the GTX 260. This is why I wanted to move away from the reference cards/coolers. I did a review a few months back of the ENGTX260 Matrix, which was near silent. However, those cards are like gold dust.

i am going to get a 260 glaciator when i get my new psu back and running (for practical reasons it must be a bare card near the end or it would block my sata ports) - i've done some research and the limited reviews i've seen say its cool and quiet.

i've seen lots of bad mouthing on these forums about it but not from people who actually own it.

No, I have not owned it. But the cooler does not have any heatpipes and doesn't have much surface area. It will either be very hot or very loud...possibly both.

I agree; the noise from my GTS250 Glaciator that I picked up on Saturday is louder than all of the fans in my main rig (Overclocked Orange). For those of you that have seen it, will know it's a beast. ;)

The noise from the Glaciator cooler really is that bad, I'm just trying to figure out if the Glaciator+ uses the same design? I would wager that it does.

the 250 glaciator and 260 glaciator look totally different so i don't think they can be compared.

I just don't know how you are going to move 100-150W or so of heat without any heatpipes and with a little fan blowing across that small surface area.

it does look like a hefty piece of metal - 5.8 oz of copper with aluminium fins on it. I don't know how good it is but why even do it if its not enough to cool it? the small number of reviews i've seen seem to suggest it is good enough.
anyway, i'll probably try it - i need a card with an after market cooler as all these new ones with their very wide coolers won't fit on my MB without blocking the sata ports.

edit: here is a picture of my MB showing the stupid place to put the sata connections. http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=18065967 - with my bare 8800gt (with a vf900 cooler) i lose 1 sata connection only.

Don't worry about the sound or heat. I've run two Asus GTX 260 Glaciators in SLi and they are very, very quiet with the stock cooling. In fact when your not gaming they'll be damn near silent at times. And the cards also ran very cool with the stock cooler.

So, I have absolutely no complaints about either sound or heat issues. A great card with pretty darn good performance too. Much quieter than the BFG GTS 250.

I've since swapped the stock Glaciator cooler for Swiftech watercooling though. Just so I could overclock a little more. :)

yes the 260 is slightly more powerful but with a 350w power supply 5% loss on the raw power is off-set by the card's power draw on his system.

I am unsure the exact measurements of the 5770's but have always thought they were not any longer than current gen cards i.e 4870's, 260's etc.

Edit: After a quick bit of googling, I found the first affirmation of card lengths, the 260 said to be 10.5 inches and the 5770 said to be 8,5 inches in length. I would also say that the 5770's have been said to be very quiet due to the low power draw and thus low temperatures resulting in lower idle fan speeds.
